Observing Lake Ohrid, illuminate by the Sun at any time of the year, one gets the impression that it has just been born, no matter that it came into being millions of years ago. In its blue waters there is a plant and animal kingdom known today only through fossils.
To the south are the hills and lower mountains of Albania. An opportunity to grasp its picturesque dark - blue surface, the harmonious ellipsoid shape gives one from different places. The rare clarity of the water in Lake Ohrid whose translucency may reach down to a depth of 22 meters, is due to numerous underwater springs all along the south and the east shores. .There are only a few lakes in the world today whose antiquity can be compared with that of Lake Ohrid. It is possible that only Tanganyika in Africa and Titicaca in South America came into being in the same geological period.
The nature of Lake Ohrid's formation is also of interest. It came about as a result of the vertical sinking of the land. Only a relatively small number of lakes have been formed in this fashion. Lake Baikal in Siberia in Russia, the deepest lake, came about in this way.
The Ohrid basin enjoys a modified Mediterranean varieties such as cypress, almond and fig trees. The whole valley and the surrounding mountains are situated in a basin where influences of a several different climates those enjoyed by the Adriatic and Aegean coasts, the continental regions and the high mountains intermingle.
A relatively low atmospheric pressure, a large number of sunny days in the year, favorable air currents, gentle seasonal changes of temperature, and a whole host of other climatic feature have a beneficial effect on health.
Every year, from the middle of July until the middle of August, the Ohrid Summer Festival is held.
There are concerts and plays in old locations, such as the Roman Amphitheater and the Church of St Sofia.
At the square close to the new port, there is a small booth where you can get information and tickets.
Nacionalna rabotilnica za racna izrabotka na hartija "Sveti Kliment Ohridski" – National Workshop for Handmade Paper "Saint Clement of Ohrid" is "one of the seven in the world in which paper is made in the original Chinese way from the 2nd century BC. Do not miss the unique opportunity to be presented this way of making the paper and imprint your memories from Ohrid of from our rich history on Gutenberg's print press […]".
Attracted by such inscription in front of the workshop, having the information about it, and being professionals in printing and book design, we entered National Workshop for Handmade Paper "Saint Clement of Ohrid". Although it is very nice place, with great equipment and marvelous pieces of handmade paper, is was so familiar to both of us (and a reminded us to our jobs) that the lack of excitement was inevitable. So, let's stick to the facts: the tradition of paper-making in Macedonia was established in the Monastery of Staint Naum, in the second half of 16th century; National Workshop for Handmade Paper "Saint Clement of Ohrid" continues with this tradition. The workshop posses a copy of a Gutenberg's print press. This press is rare and authentic copy of the original, which is on display in the Gutenberg Museum in the German city of Mainz, and it works in the same way. The press was built in 1937 in Austria and it is one of the only two existing copies in Europe. The other is in the Bled castle, in Slovenia. Methodology of printing is identical as the one used to print the Bible in the 15th century.
The workshop is owned and run by Ljupco Panevski. For those whose job is not connected with printing and paper-making, visit to the National Workshop for Handmade Paper "Saint Clement of Ohrid" will probably be the great experience.
The workshop is located in the nicest part of the old city, next to the Robev family house. The entry is free.
My local guide after have lunch offered himself to show the outskirts and i accepted kindly. the path as you see on this pic departs from Kaneo and going up the hill through pine trees and following the linecoast
