Lake View

Very nice modern hotel/appartments in the center of Ohrid with superb view at the lake. The hotel is located at the boulevard along the lake, close to the old harbour, see the website below for the exact location.

Villa Dea Hotel is for accomodation only, they do not have a restaurant. They advice you to have breakfast in the hotel on the other site of the street, but that hotel is very expensive. You better get some sandwiches at one of the excellent bakeries in the neighbourhood and eat them alongsite the lake!

The hotel is located above its own bar, so try to get rooms that are on the third floor, it will be less noisy. Also better view at the lake!

The entrance to the hotel is on the same street as Restaurant Fontana, and if you walk until the big crossing with the trafic lights, there is a big supermarket and a great place for take-away skara (grilled meat). At the same crossing are also some bakeries.

Ohrid - Thessaloniki

by malashen

Greetings,

Is there bus connection between Ohrid and Thessaloniki, and if yes, how long would it take me to travel?

Many thanks!

I have to go to thessaloniki on the 18th. Up to now the best offer is to go by taxi. 100euros from ohrid. If we share the price that would not be to bad

Hi!
I am not sure are there direct buses from Ohrid, but i am sure you can catch one from Bitola. And yeah, 100 euros are not expensive at all, but you can save your money and take a bus to Bitola and from there to Thessaloniki. If you take a cab, bargain for the price a bit.
It will take approx. 4 hours or less to Thessaloniki.

Ohrid is sooooo beautiful! I wanna go back! :)

Have a nice trip!

There are plenty of buses from Ohrid to Bitola (1-1.5 hours), and from Florina on the other side of the Greek border to Thessaloniki (3-4 hours, I think). But as far as I know there are no buses between Bitola and Florina, so you would probably need to take a taxi for that bit.

Great Views

by agmoose02

Wherever you go around Lake Ohrid, keep your eyes open and your camera ready. You never know when there is a great view just around the corner. Also the feel of the views change with the weather and the time of day, so just stay alert to any good picture opportunity.

The Ohrid Summer Festival

by Vlatko_mk

Chroniclers have written: "The musical and theatre festival called "Ohrid Summer" was born on 4th August 1961 under the vaults of the cathedral temple of St. Sofia. The Primadonna of the Opera within the Macedonian National Theatre from Skopje, Ana Lipsa-Tofovic, followed by Ladislav Predlik on piano, performed the arias of Stradella, Rossi, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and Gluck. The following year Vladimir Ruzgak (Croatia), the Slovenian Octet (Slovenia), Martina Arojo (USA), and once again Ana Lipsa-Tofovic confirmed the fact that the temple of the ancient Ohrid Archiepiscopate can also be the temple of arts.
In its thriving years "Ohrid Summer" started to act as a Musical Academy. The presence of the great instrumental virtuosos was used for organizing special seminars aiming at passing the experience to the new generation. Through the hands of the esteemed maestro such as Elephterio Papastavro (cello), Jeanne Blanchard (piano), Leonid Kogan (violin), Aldo Chiccolini (piano), Andre Navara (cello), Octav Enigharesco and Johnny Becky (soloists), Eugenia Chugaieva (violin), Ikhukko Endo (piano), and Arbo Valdma (piano), generations of musicians took part in these seminars. They, later on in their lives, gained affirmation on the musical stages throughout the world.
Since 1995 "Ohrid Summer" is a member of the European Festival Association (Association Européenne Des Festivals)
It should be mentioned that after 37 years of "Ohrid Summer", Ohrid has become a place where highly artistic qualities are respected and from where universal artistic messages have been disseminated. In the last three and the half decades this has been confirmed by artists from more than 50 countries world-wide, who have brought more than 1, 200 musical and theatrical performances to an audience of more than one million people.

Ohrid, Macedonia as base for visits in Balkans

by StanYuni

I visited a friend in Pristina when I used to live in Ohrid, Macedonia in 1999-2000. Ohrid is a beautiful town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both nature and culture, located on Lake Ohrid near where Macedonia, Albani, and Greece meet. It is inexpensive, but might be crowded during the Ohrid Summer Festival (mid July-mid August). If you stayed there, your son could take a bus via Skopje and join you. Or you could visit him in Prinstina and actually see where he is working and living. If he can do it, so can you. Dubrovnik would be even more crowded and expensive than Ohrid. It will be overrun with tourists during the summer. You can reach Ohrid by bus from Thessaloniki or Skopje, but I would fly in directly from Zurich or Vienna, if possible. Enjoy!

3-4 day trip Ohrid-Prilep-Krusevo-Ohrid

by Pijlmans

We did a very nice 3-day trip, starting from Ohrid, two days in Prilep, a stay in the monestery of St Spas in Trstenik close to Krusevo, and a visit to Krusevo.

The trip contains hikes (from Prilep to the Monastery of Treskovec where you could also stay one extra night, and from the Monastery of St Spas to Krusevo) as well as cultural and historical sites (Fortress Towers of Marko and Monestery of St Michael the Archangel in Prilep, Meckin Kamen and the Ilinden Uprising Monument in Krusevo).

Check my pages about the towns as well as the tips if you´re interested!
