How do I get to Ohrid by bus, from Petrich?

Re: From Petrich

by Pijlmans

I'm not an expert on the subject, but i would say from Sofia to Skopje and from Skopje to Ohrid. I only have been taking the bus from Skopje to Ohrid (about 15 euros if i remember correctly). I always bought my ticket a couple of days in advance at the bus station in Skopje, but it should be possible to take the bus on the spot as well...

This is the website of the busstation in Skopje: http://www.sas.com.mk/en/timetable.php

Maybe one of the locals can be of more help...

Cheers
Dennis

Re: From Petrich

It might be possible to travel vie Strumica (MK) and Bitola. However, I am deeply suspicious of finding any information about the cross-border bus on the Internet. If you can, ask around when in Petrich. As for the connection Bitola - Ohrid, you can deduce it from the list of the Skopje - Ohrid intermediate stops (some buses go via Bitola). There should be even more, I guess.
If travelling via Strumica and Bitola seems a pain for you (which it might actually be), travel via Sofia. There are direct buses to Ohrid as well.

Hope that helps.

If you can make from Petrich to Blagorvgrad, there is bus service wich goes Istanbul-Bitola via Blagoevgrad and you can get on that service.
Once you are in Bitola there is bus atleast 4 times a day to Ohrid during the winter and 6-7 times a day during the summer...
Chek my Bitola and Ohrid page for bus station tel no's.

Hope this helps

Travel Tips for Ohrid

Sveta Jovan

by DPando

Located as i said on my accomodation tip on the easternmost end from the town is a tiny and small hermitage over the lake ...such a great view from beneath it ...woth the while to spend some hours to get this holly place for all balacanic people
St Jovan at Kaneo is well signed on the winding streets into the town (well more or less)..its a church dated from XIII century

And it smells...!

by elgin99

Ohrid smells wonderful. Really, everywhere attracted my caution like it smelled.
I have noticed again and again how good it smells in the town. The many flowers are the reason everywhere. Flowers, primarily many roses and blossoming trees and bushes, in gardens, houses, and everywhere in the nature.
They do not smell, but the deep red poppy catched my eyes. The wild poppy in Germany is really pallid.

Dress Appropriately

by agmoose02

When visiting the many churches in the area, and this goes for just about everywhere in the world, please be respectful and dress appropriately. This means covered shoulders and stomach as well as not wearing shorts. Another thing I will add, since I saw this at one church is no see through clothing.

Mountain Bike Trail in Galicica National Park

by Pijlmans

There is a marked mountain bike trial in Galicica National Park.

The start of the trail is next to the petrol station on the roundabout on the road Bulevar Turisticka, just before you leave Ohrid on the road to St Naum.

Here you will also find a big sign with information about the trail, see the pictures for a more detailed view of the map and legend.

The trail goes from this point to the village Velestovo and then south through the Galicica National park.

The mountain bike trail from Ohrid to Dva Javori is 30.1 km, the trail back from Dva Javori is 25.1 km (together 55.2 km).

From this point, also a walk to the Church of St Petka in the village Velgosti, via the village Ramne, starts on top of the stairs shown in the pictures. Please see my description of this walk before you attemp to do it, because it is very badly marked!

Zaum, Sveta Bogorodica Zaumska (I&V)

by Zvrlj

Crkvata Sveta Bogorodica Zaumska – the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum is the beautiful, richly decorated edifice. It is located approximately 20 km from the city of Ohrid, at the stunning location, on a small secluded beach squeezed between almost vertical rocks of Mount Galicica on the east, and water of the Ohrid Lake on the west. It is accessible only from the lake side, by boat.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum is the endowment of Grgur Brankovic aka Kesar Grgur. Grgur, an almost forgotten figure, was the elder brother of Vuk Brankovic, the most powerful Serbian nobleman in the last decade of the 14th century.

An inscription in the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum indicates that it was erected and the fresco painted in 1361. In its original appearance the church had a parvis of which the remains can be easily spotted. The frescoes were commissioned by Archbishop Gregory of Devol, one of the most influential figures of the Archbishopric of Ohrid in the mid 14th century. Although highly damaged and demolished by the persons who scratched their names, the frescoes in the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum, artwork of an unknown master probably educated in Thessaloniki, are among the peaks of the 14th century fresco painting in Macedonia. The most interesting and intriguing fresco in the church is the depiction of a very rare theme – Saint Anna breastfeeding Virgin Mary, painted on the north wall.

The easiest way to reach the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum is take a boat ride from the village of Trpejca. The entrance to the church is free, but a symbolic donation is matter of good manners.
