Hotel Aleksandar - nice and quiet
We stayed for 2 nights in the Hotel Aleksandar in June 2011. We booked the twin room via booking.com and we payed Euro 65 per night including breakfast.
The hotel is somewhat outside the city center which is not a problem for good walkers. We walked from the bus/train station in about half an hour, stopping a few times to look at the map. It is located uphill from the center in a residential area. The hotel is tucked away from a nearby slightly busy road and is very quiet. There is bus no. 16 you could use. Close by there is a small supermarket and a bit further a big one.
They ordered a taxi for us to go to the airport. It had the meter running but told us at the airport that there is a fixed price of 800 MKD which is a good price as the hotel told us that it would be around 800-900 MKD. The meter showed less but the taxi driver has to pay toll on the motorway as well. It was a pretty straight forward drive which took no more than 30 minutes with little traffic.
I would stay in the Hotel Aleksandar again any time. Staff was very friendly and helpful but they don't have city maps.
Unique Quality: We had room no. 101 on the ground floor. The room was spacious but there was only one chair for two people. The TV had CNN but the quality was not always good enough to watch especially in the morning. They have free wifi, the code for it was in the room. We didn't use it, so I don't know how good it works. The towels were not changed and this was not neccessary either. There was a window in the bathroom which was handy to air the place. The shower was good but there is no hook to hang up the shower head.
Breakfast was buffet style with white and brown toast bread, cheese, cold meat, various pastes, cheese triangles, butter, honey, jam, egg, joghurt, juice, various tea bags (including mountain tea!), coffee, cereals, fruit etc.
