From Skopie to Kolkata
by Manara
Mother Teresa, whose name will be remembered forever as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, was born in Skopje. She was born here in 1910 and her name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. When she became a nun, at the age of 21, she had to change her name, and took the name Teresa. She wanted to become a missionary and so she joined the Sisters of Loreto and went to India. In her first years there she was a teacher in the mission’s school, but afterwards she devoted herself to help the poorest among the poors, and the many years of heroic efforts in this mission made her famous all over the world. She described herself as a humble tool, like a pencil, in the hand of God.
Her native city has dedicated to her a statue that can be seen in Macedonia Street.

Spiffing up Skopje - II
by shrimp56
Here is a closeup of the rebuilt bridge still under construction. Right now it is a *pain* to get to the carsija as the bridge is closed to pedestrian traffic.

The bottom photo is of the National Theatre -- all cleaned up and grafitti-free.
Being mobile ...
by shrimp56
This summer in Skopje it seemed as though I was the only person without a mobile phone. The Macedonian Telecom mobile provider, Mobimak, has finally got some competition from the Greek-based Cosmofon. What this poster is advertising is the Mobimak roaming area. The words translate into "Just like home"
Packing List
by gligor_kot
A big bag and one big bag plus to pack the things you are going to buy, because there are many cheap things in Skopje. The summers are really hot there, so I think you should take something easy for wearing, and the winters are very cold so you should take some jumpers, and woolen clothes, because the temperature this last winter was -18 degrees Celsius. You should take your personal medication, and all the other things like toiletries you can buy in Skopje, they are very cheap. You should take a camera (if you have) or something like that, because there are really nice places to visit and take piture of in Skopje. Also for the batteries you can buy them in Skopje at a place called the 'Green Market'.
