Travel Tips for Skopje

Daut Pasha and Chifte Hamam national galleries

by Natrix

The two hamams (Turkish baths) transformed into art galleries are a must-see in Skopje! The buildings themselves are very interesting and the exhibitions are also worth-while. The entry only costs 50 Denars (or 20 for students) and it's absolutely worth it!

The Way It Was

by Manara

In Macedonia Street you can see just a couple of buildings that are not modern. I do not know when they were built, but their appearance makes you think of similar facades in Vienna or Prague and they probably belong to the early years of 20th Century or to the last years of the 19th.
In 1873, when Skopje still had its old name Uskub, the railway to Thessaloniki was completed and the city increased considerably its trades and also its population.
It is fascinating to think how the city must have looked like in those times, a European city under Ottoman rule, certainly an intriguing combination.

Currency

by DPando

The currency in Makedonia is makedonian dinar....each euro is equivalent to 165 dinars.... the prices there are quite cheap but most expensive than in Bulgaria...
the banknotes are so colourfull its like a monopoly game and try to change your euros or US $ in offices where no comissions are applied !!
The food is not expensive as well beer but clothes i guess rarely that its so so expensive...a " independent brand" pullover costed me 50 euros !!

How a culture changes ...

The bottom is a picture of the old bookstore, Kultura that dates from socilaist days. It is located right on the main square.Their stock has gotten better, but it is still a bit fusty.

An the other photo is of the Mobimak building -- the mobile phone division of Macedonian Telecommunications.

Darko Pancev's "Cafe 9"

by Dirim

This is not a sports place. However, I think that any football lover may like to go and have a drink in Darko Pancev who was in the heroic team of Red Star that won the European Cup in 1991, who also won the "golden boot" in Europe in 1991.

He is now, manager of Vardar Skopje.
