Lots of things to see and do.

My favorite thing about Skopje - the beautiful girls of course!
Genarally, it totally depends on what brings you to Skopje. As
I went there to chill out a bit on weekends from work; a must-do activity for me was a visit to McDonalds, which most likely is nothing exciting for others. But I would say, climbing up the path to the old fortress Kale is a must for any visitor. Onmy first night in Skopje I was starving and desperately looking for a decent restaurant. I strolled for about 45 minutes through the city’s center and could not find a single inviting place to dine-out. I passed two kinda fast-food sausage places and about 100 cafes and smaller bars, but no fine restaurant. I finally ended up in one sort of communism-left-over restaurant. That was quite memorable and had never happened to me in the past in hundreds of cities and towns I had visited. No I knoe plenty of beautiful, nice restaurants with amazing food to even more amazing prices. Just thinking about the food makes me hungry.
Visit The Old Town,

Old Town
Skopje Old Town is the most attractive section of the city. It comprises about 1,000 shops, grills, restaurants, and pastry shops. The Old Town is also the location of the Church of the Holy Saviour with its unique iconostasis executed in masterful woodcarving (18-l9th centuries). The yard of this church houses the sarcophagus with the body of the ideologist of the Macedonian national liberation movement, Goce Delcev (1872-1903). Also to be found in the Old Town are the Kursumli An (l6th century) and the Suli An (l5th century) caravanserais, and the Daut Pasha Baths (l5th century) with its two large and eleven small domes, now housing the Art Gallery. Other buildings which may be found here are the Hjuncar Mosque (l5th century), the Clock Tower (l6th century), the Isak-Bey Mosque (l5th century) and the Mustapha Pasha Mosque (l5th century). The old Skopje fortress, called Kale (10-l2th centuries), is situated directly above the Old Town.
Nice cuppa, anyone?

In common with many other European countries, the drinking of herbal infusions / teas as an alternative to coffee in cafes is very prevalent. The selection is quite amazing. I don't think I've ever seen so many varieties. As you can see from the accompanying image, most of them are labelled in Ebglish and Cyrillic, but some arent't and it's fun to just order one at random and then try and guess what it is.
I really wish this practice would catch on in the UK.
Click on the products page, then the herbal teas page on the attached website for an idea of the variety available. I must say, I've never tried marsh mallow tea! Maybe next time.
Need I bring the...?

Well, just to let you know - Skopje has really cold winters (it gets below freezing point) and extremely hot summers (talking about global warming) - in other words, taking it to the extremes. This means that the clothing and shoes, depend on the period when you're visiting.
Try to avoid August (in August I suggest you go to Ohird). The temperatures are usually pretty high, and since this is not a place located by a lake or (even better) a sea, it is very hot.
I like Skopje in May, especially at the end of May. Skopje is full of Linden trees and in that period they're in bloom so it smells so nice.
During autumn there are rainy days, but it is not so bad.
Oh, and for those who enjoy skiing - in winter you can do that in Mavrovo. (at the moment I doubt Popova Shapka is an attractive place for skiing)
Hope you enjoy!
Gostivar

Gostivar is about an hour's drive from Skopje.
It is a tidy and picturesque town. The town center is a shopping mecca (clothings, jewelery, knicknacks).
Wikipedia has a nice writeup of Gostivar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gostivar, which also mentions a nearby village known as Vrutok. In Vrutok you will find a clean stretch of the Vardar River where trouts can be fished.
A local friend took us to the best fish restaurant ("Riben Eestoran") in the village, known as Kaj Sime (see photo). This restaurant specializes in trouts, which are kept fresh in a tank. The trouts are served grilled and you can sit in one of the outdoor gazebos to enjoy your meal with a view of mountain woods.
