Transnational busses

by TSM_student

Hey guys!

i read that there are bus connections from skopje to Ljubljana, Thessaloniki, Munich, Bonn and so on. i am pretty sure that there is an official homepage where i can look up the timetables and destinations but so far i could not find it.

it would be really great if someone can provide me with the link or at least where i might get the necessary information.

thx!

Here's the Skoje bus station site in English:

http://www.sas.com.mk/index%20en.html

and you may also be able to find times/fares using the Slovenia, Greece, Germany etc Eurolines web links from the European portal for long-distnace bus services:

Hi Doris,

You're a fast learner, hahaha!

Unfortunately, the English part of the Skopje bus station does not work since ages, so let me know if you need some help with some specific translations (which I will outsource to my Macedonian girlfriend because I have to admit I can only order beer in Macedonian :-)

Cheers,
Dennis

Last time that mountain smoked, it did it for over 2 years in the row.
Just curious, what will happen with the transatlantic travel.

As for Skopje: a relatively safe bet to/from Vienna is so-called "Stückelung" of railway tickets.

1) get a discount trip to Bratislava/Pressburg
2) buy in Bratislava/Pressburg a Brtislava-Budapest-Bratislava round-trip train ticket for 16 Euro. The ticket is valid for a month.
3) buy in Budapest a Budapest-Belgrade-Budapest round-trip train ticket for 26 Euro
4) buy in Belgrade a Belgrade-Skopje-Belgrade round-trip train ticket for about 40 Euro.

Preserving the traditions

by Manara

Macedonia has a long tradition of craftworks: wood carving, hammered copper, filigree jewelry, embroidery. As in many other countries, these traditional arts were at risk of being abandoned and forgotten, but luckily the MATA came to their aid.
The Macedonian Artisan Trade Association is a non-profit, non-governmental organization created to protect and develop the craft trade, by training young artisans and helping them to access the market. MATA has established a selling point in the centre of Skopje, in the Feudal Tower.
The embroidery you see in the picture is not one of those currently sold at the MATA shop: it is a century-old piece, in a pattern that was typical of Skopje.
If you want to know more, and to see the products that you can buy through the MATA shops, this is the website: www.matacraft.org.mk

Opinci, leather sandals

by Pijlmans

In the old Turkish part of Skopje, called Carsija, there are some shops that sell the traditional Macedonian leather sandals.

These leather sandals are called "opinci".

You'll find them from size key-ring to bigfoot.

They make a good traditional souvenir!

Drinking Skopsko beer

by shrimp56

The Skopje Brewery is one of the success stories in Macedonia. It represents Coca-Cola products as well as producing the popular beer that carries it's name. The new ad campaign is very simple: "CAKAM SKOPSKO means, simply, "I like Skopsko"!
