Nothing fancy.

by planxty about Hotel Kapistec.

Although describing itself as a hotel, this is really just a B&B. It is adequate and spotlessly clean, but nothing special. In fact, to be honest, it's a bit frayed round the edges.

It's about a twenty minute stroll from the centre of the city, situated in a pleasant suburb under the Vodno mountain. There are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants nearby, as well as a supermarket and a MacDonalds, if that's your thing. If you don't fancy the walk, there is a regular bus service on the nearby str. Ivo Lola Ribar.

The lady who runs the place is extremely friendly and has some English, although her French is considerably better.

Breakfast is the typically European cereal, fruit juice, bread, cheese and cold meats affair, but you can eat as much as you like, which gives you a good start to the day.

In a town where hotel prices are comparatively high, it's a good budget place to stay.

Mount Vodno

by alectrevor

On top of mount Vodno is a huge Cross built in 2000. Vodno is 1066 metres high, there are marked hiking paths to the Cross for the fit people. Looking at it from Skopje was enough for me,

My beautiful VODNO

by Malecka

"Vodno"

I am not sure if all the Skopje citizens are aware of the treasure we have called Vodno. The hill that is pretty much a symbol of the city offers some great hiking tours, a good workout, enjoyable nature and some beautiful panoramic sights of Skopje.

taxi from airport

by ketch1973

hi everyone.
i believe there are no airport buses going to skopje from the airport. does anyone know roughly how much a taxi will be going to the city centre??

kind regards,

mike

Not sure about the price but I have heard that it is a bad idea to catch a cab outside the airport in Skopje - they are notorious for ripping people off! ring for one or catch one that is dropping off someone to the airport and is returning to the city centre. THey will want another fare and are more likely to be legitimate.
All the best

ketch1973, the price depends on this:

If you take one of the individual taxi drivers waiting for naive tourists in front of the airport, they will most probably overcharge you, as pure1942 said. They dont belong to any taxi company so avoid them.

Instead, use a cab from a reputable company. You can do that by:

- Booking online in advance, for example at http://www.taxi.com.mk/en/company.html (thats "Komak Komerc" company, I regulary use them, but I've never used their online services so if it doesnt work for some reason try to reach them by phone)
- Calling taxi by phone. After arriving, enter the airport and use the public phone located right from the main entrance with a calling card from the shop nearby. Or call from a mobile phone. If thats expensive, ask someone to call for you. Calling by SMS is also possible for some companies.
Numbers of various companies:
15191 Vodno Company
15192 Plava Laguna Company
15193 Komak Komerc
15195 Vardar
15197 Pulsar
15188 Staro Vodno
and so on and so on.. there are many

Personaly, I would recommend "Komak Komerc", because of the price: from the airport to the city or vice-versa they will charge you ~10 euros (approx. 600-650 Macedonian denars depending on the current exchange rate). The rip-off taxi drivers may charge you twice of that! So beware

Note: Taxis dont use their taximeters when driving to/from the airport as it is a location out of the city.

hi, i live in macedonia:)
well if you're in skopje, go taste a little bit of the macedonian nightlife, go at night on mount vodno, to the millenium cross statue on the top of the hill it's very nice to see skopje at night from above. there are many other things to do.
but i strongly recommend you to go to the city of ohrid, then you will see the real macedonia and it's beauty!
for stay take a look at:

http://www.hostelz.com/display.php/28138+Hotel+Kapistec
http://www.brateks.com.mk/
http://www.unet.com.mk/tomcesofka/

for where to eat, you shouldnt be worried about that, skopje is full of restaurants and they are very cheap with good food.
i recommend you restaurant Bonimi in the Centre of skopje. and Ezerce in the city park with a nice view over a little lake:)

it will be perfect if you could speak macedonian hehe, but with english you'll have no problem too:)

and if you decide to come, Welcome to Macedonia and have a nice stay!;)

Hello

I am an American living in Skopje. I have been here for about 4 months. If you come we must go for coffee. Anyhow, hotels here aren't that cheap, I think Hotel Kapistec is 20 euros a night, and there is a hostel that might be 15 euros a night. I can give you their phone numbers if you want. Hotel Kapistec has a website here: http://www.hotel-kapistec.com.mk/home.htm -- It's an okay place and they have cable.

The places you can mostly get to from the center, which you can get to very cheap by saying center to any taxi driver. You can cross the bridge and go into the old town, which has plenty of interesting things. There are lots of older mosques with people who will take you up into the minarets and stuff if you want, with no money expected.

Lots of cheap food and lots of people speak English. It is a good city and worth stopping by for a couple days if you are in the area. Not a place I would fly from across the world to see or anything, but it is all right.
