We stayed here one night in Spring. 2008. This hotel is aptly named, for it sits at the head of Skopje's main square. The square is a massive Soviet-era concrete construction, partly redeemed by its location adjacent to the historic river bridge and its lively foot traffic. The hotel is also near many pleasant restaurants. The hotel itself is on the top floor of its building and reachable only be elevator. It consists of one long hall of rooms with a nice terrace bar at the end. In March, the terrace was still cool but had been surrounded with clear plastic to screen out wind or rain. There is no restaurant or breakfast, but coffee and fruit juices are available in the terrace bar or rooms. Our room was nicely decorated, pleasant and clean, although there is no luxury here. The reception is manned around the clock with an attentive English-speaking staff. This is a great choice for vacation or business travellers who want comfort at a reasonable price.
I did experience some difficulties making a reservation through e-mail. Evidently the hotel's system was down, but a courteuous employee finally called me in the U.S. to confirm the reservation!
Unique Quality: Nice views from the pleasant terrace
Directions: On the main square.
Hotel Square is on the 6th floor of the same building that houses a daily newspaper, various foreign development agencies and the nationalist party offices. The elevator goes to the highest floor called only, although it stops at 5 and does not go to 6. All this did not bode well for a private hotel, but in fact the Hotel Square is a beautiful and secure hotel with about 10 rooms all equipped with their own bathrooms (shower), air conditioning, mini bar and satellite TV. The beds are large but the matresses are a bit old. There is also a café at the end of the hall. Hotel staff is helpful and friendly and many of them speak very good English. The rooms go for 45 euro a person per night or the equivalent in MKD and have to be paid in advance.
Unique Quality: The room was very comfortable, but by far my favourite was the satellite TV. What would a trip to the Balkans be without becoming addicted to Balkanika TV?
Directions: Directly across from the Stone Bridge
Great managers & good service. Very nice and comfortable rooms, perfectly colour-coordinated to make you feel relaxed & fall asleep!
Superb views from their restaurant balcony, where you can just sit & watch the city go by, below on Macedonia Square.
Unique Quality: Compact hotel with 8 rooms, clean & presentable. Clean rooms & bathrooms.
Large TV screen to watch MTV, dart-board to test your aim, and superb views over Macedonia Square & over river Vardar.
In fact, early dawn I saw something i've never seen or heard of before.. a small, WWI-style plane was flying very low spraying insecticides to combat the mosquitos from the River. What a sight that was!!
Directions: 5 minutes taxi ride from the main road at Slatkarnica Palma, or from the international bus station.
