Plostad Makedonija
Just a picture of Main Square in Skopje- Makedonija Square!
It has been actually renowated some 3 years ago, so this is quite a new look.
It is very wide now, but I prefered the older "version" of city square .

Hi
Does anyone have times of buses from Skopje to Ohrid and the times back to Skopje?
Is there a very early bus from Ohrid back to Skopje as my flight is at 3 o clock so I would have to be at the airport about 12.30 or is this leaving it too close?Would I be better leaving Ohrid the evening before and staying overnight in Skopje?
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
This is the website of the Skopje bus station: http://www.sas.com.mk/
Unfortunately the English part is still not working, but here you can see the times of the buses from Skopje to Ohrid: http://www.sas.com.mk/vozni%20redovi/ohrid.png
Early buses are indeed going from Ohrid to Skopje, check at Ohrid bus station for the exact times. So you should be able to make your plane. Skopje airport is pretty small, it should be OK to be there 90-60 minutes before departure so you don't have too rush too much actually. But it's up to you what you would consider most convenient...
Keep in mind that there are no buses from/to the airport from Skopje and that you'll have to take a taxi.
Cheers,
Dennis
BTW, here is an indication of the bus times for Ohrid-Skopje: http://wikitravel.org/en/Ohrid
But check at the busstation (maybe get your ticket in advance just to be sure!)

Thanks Dennis!
just one small notice...Definitely it would be cheaper to stay in Ohrid and than take a bus to Skopje in the morning. It's a 3,5-4 hrs bus ride and additional 30mins from the bus station to the airport. My advice for a reliable taxi service company in Skopje is Lotus ( http://www.lotustransport.com/default_en.aspx ). They have very professional drivers and charge flat rate of 800den (about 13eur) to the airport. Haven't tried their online booking service, but you can always count on them if you call.
I'd recommend spending a night in Skopje. It's an interesting, relaxed city with some great restaurants. It was a little more expensive than Ohrid, but I found the quality of accommodation was also higher.

An oasis of peace it could be the headline for this place....once you get in ..its so relaxied ambient...listening the water runs listening to the men talking about their stuff.... gardens....really charm place !!
Muslims in Skopje are not recently immigrants to the city and as such are very much at ease displaying outwardly Muslim traditions and morals. One particular example is women's dress, which is usually conservative but not extreme among Albanian women. Typically they will wear loose and covering clothes (a skirt, no pants) and a head scarf. I did not see anyone woman with a veil, in all black or in a burqa, but that doesn't mean that they wouldn't be offended if a Western woman tried to enter a mosque in a tank top. Just be aware of traditions and respect them when you are in someone else's place of worship. There is evidently a strong current of Islamic feeling here (whether longstanding or new) as they were selling pictures of the Kaaba and of Mecca in the marketplace along side silver ornaments with suraat from the Qur'an carved into them.
Well maybe it's not officially called cross day, but that is an easy way to remember it ! In the Orthodox Church there is a feast day to celebrate the day that John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the river Jordan. In Skopje, at 12 noon, a priest stands on the stone bridge and throws a cross into the Vardar. Hundreds of men in bathing suits dive for the cross. The one who succeeds is supposed to have a year of good health ... and also wins some gifts from the church. In the past this has included a color TV !! Since this happens in January, it is not for the faint of heart !! Though there are rescue boats, just in case ....
