Housing (1)
by diocletianvs
The ideals of the Modernist architecture of the 1920s – lightness and openness; and life in nature – was successfully realized in the dwellings and the surroundings of Tapiola. One of the most important things of the settings of the buildings was the contact with nature, enabling nice views from the flats as well as the safe areas for children and various outdoor activities in the vicinity of homes.
Another important feature of Tapiola is the mix of different types of housing, ranging from single-family houses to the appartment blocks and towers. This enabled desired mix of different social groups of inhabitants.
The general feature when photographing housing in Tapiola are birch trees in the foreground, making a desired buffer between the public paths and more intimate domestic interiors as well as the characteristic feature of this Garden City.
The most popular sport in Finland
by Jarra
Icehockey is the most popular sport in Finland so one of the must thing to do in Finland is defenitely to see the game. Espoo Blues was founded in 1984 (formerly known as Kiekko-Espoo). Kiekko-Espoo fought its way to SM-league (Finnish Championship Hockey league) in spring 1992. Year 1998 Kiekko Espoo's name was changed to Espoo Blues, now known as Blues. The Blues plays its home games in very modern ice rink called Lansiauto Areena. The areena is situated right in the middle of Espoo, in Tapiola. It hosts seats for 6875 people. Go there and enjoy the event. Icehockey matches are nowadays much more than just the game. You can even have a dinner during the game! Tickets for adults from 8 euros to 25 euros.
Nice sea view
by Chris_Bore
We stayed at the Radisson Hotel in Espoo. This is conveniently near the Espoo convention centre (once the student's union building). Just inside the convention centre is an indoor spit roast big enough to take an ox. I don't know if they still use it.
The immediate area is not all that exciting, but there is a nice coast with a road and path running alongside. Very open, with good clear light. Good for jogging, and I think the hotel hired bikes which would have been rally nice if we had time. We also walked from the hotel up the hill and into woods: these are OK, not special (but not everywhere has to be special).
Nokia Head Office, Keilalahti
by diocletianvs
Nokia success story is also shown in the architectural expression of their new head office set in the natural surroundings of Keilalahti. High-tech architecture is beautifully set on the natural shores and is the first thing one sees when coming on the highway from Helsinki to Espoo.
Fresh Californian
by nomadig about Paul's Bistro
Paul's Bistro is a refreshing restaurant in shopping mall Sello. Located on the newly opened Hotel Palace Sello, the restaurant provides an oasis for shoppers. However, it is not accessible inside the mall, and thus it is not crowded as the rest of the restaurants. Being twice as expensive as the rest of the gang helps also to keep the hordes away.
The restaurant is not, however, expensive and the food combined with the atmosphere and excellent service makes it really a good deal. Palace restaurants operate several top-notch restaurants around Helsinki, and their love to the customer shows through in everything, even if Paul's is a bit scaled down version.
The kitchen is inspired by the Bay area cooking, sort of fusion between Italian, Asian and American kitchens, and the chefs know their trade. The lamb hamburger was one of the best that I've ever eaten, and it brought back memories from fresh grills of San Jose and Emeryville.
