Helsinki mini cruise to St Petersburg

by lydia66

Has anyone travelled on the St Petersburg mini cruise from Helsinki in the below car deck cabins? Were they OK, and did they smell of diesel fuel? They are so much cheaper than the other cabins that I just wanted to check what the drawbacks might be. Also, has anyone tried out the bus shuttle in St Petersburg between the main sights? I gather that this is the only way to avoid buying visas.

OK, I have been to St Petersburg from Helsinki but by train, now that really has nothing to do with most of your question but I can't see how by simply using another mode of transport to get to St Petersburg you can avoid getting a Visa, Russia is one of the hardest to organise, at least in my experience it was. So unless you know something that most don't I can't see how you can escape getting (or trying to) a Visa. I would be interested in hearing who said it could be done.

I am quite sure that the ONLY way to get ashore on such a mini-cruise without a visa for russia is to participate in a tour organized by your ship. That is the way that it also works for all foreign cruiseships coming to Russia, i was that way in communiste times and is still that way today !
You have to stick to the group and in case you try to escape you might be in real trouble getting back to your ship. These excursions will not be cheap but the only way to get ashore for you !

Travel Tips for Helsinki

Boat renting

by GuntherHK

There is possibility to rent a rowing boat or a pedal boat on Töölönlahti.
Costs about 10 euros per hour.
In Töölönlahti you have nice views over Linnanmäki amusement park, Finlandia House, opera House etc.

Location: Backyard of Finlandia House

Left Luggage

by biggeorge

No before you ask it's not my favourite thing , i just couldn't figure out where to put a tip about left luggage. Just go to the station and follow the signs for suitcase and key , stick your bag in the locker ( like at swimming pools ) bung in 3 Euro's and off you go . Light on your feet , able to run around , a mule no longer.

"The White Daughter of the Baltic"

by finlandia

Helsinki (Helsingfors in Swedish) is the northernmost capital on the European continent. It is the capital of the land of the midnight sun!

Helsinki has a coast line of 98 kilometers and there are beautiful 315 islands in Helsinki. Helsinki is called the White Daughter of the Baltic. So remember to visit these beautiful islands: Suomenlinna, Harakka etc.

But Helsinki isn't only a paradise for nature lovers. You find extremely good shops and old buildings in this capital. And there are over 600 restaurants in Helsinki :)

Go to a local soccer game.I really enjoyed hanging out at a soccer game with the local fans as they chanted the team to victory. These are just some of them after the game as the team departs the field.

See the orthodox church

by jonkb

We managed to get inside before some sort of service, but had to go before the service started. Bummer! The inside of that church was magnificent. I did not take any pictures inside the church, so you'll have to do with what it looks like on the outside.

Q: Do busses run to the airport 24/7? If not, what time do they start? "I need to get to the airport by 6 AM on Sunday (so I probably need to get on the bus around 5:30 AM), will the 615 or the Finnair..."

A: "I walked down to where the 615 departs from but I didn't see any type of time-schedule listed anywhere. :/"
