ATM - Cheat Sheet
by irvbur
Although ATM machines are to be found all over, the transaction is always in local currency. BE PREPARED. For example, do not go up to an ATM and think you'd like to withdraw $500 worth of local currency. You first must know the amount in local currency that $500 will buy. I always carry a currency cheat sheet when travelling. In addition to ATM transactions, it's also easier to bargain and make purchases.

For a long stay in Helsinki...
by Travellingismylife
The location of Helsinki is great because you can go to many other countries by boat. If you stay for a couple of weeks in Helsinki, I suggest that you should take the boat to go to Stockholm. You leave on Friday evening, arrived on Saturday morning in Sweden and you are back in Finland on Sunday morning. If you are young and want to party all night, you must go on the Silja boat. I had so much fun!!!! It was awesome! It costed me 60E. But the meals are not included in the price...=( And you can compare Helsinki and Stockholm..both have their own charms.
Escape... in the city!
by AndyRG
Being really in the nature, Helsinki offers the pleasures which can be offered by its double identity.
The Natural History Museum (Snellmaninkatu 3) has an attractive location in the centre, with permanent exhibitions. The museum building also houses the Zoological Museum, which is a research department, and the Geological Museum, which is divided into the Division of Mineralogy and Paleontology.
Don't miss the rock church, which has been built in a... rock, Jean Sibelious monument (it was made by Eila Hiltunen in memory of the great composer), the Sports Museum near the Olympic Stadium. From its tower you can have a very good view of the city.
You can have a nice time by going to the zoo, which is at an island near the port! The centrre is at a small distance from there, see the excellent Kiasma and the Finladia Hall (made by Alvar Aalto) too.

Try the local salmon dishes - there is a great variety and its healthy but it still works well with wine or beer. The friendly atmosphere of the people and the attention of people in shops and staff generally.
Esplanadintori, Kiesma Museum...

Esplanadintori, Kiesma Museum of Contemporary Art, Stockmann department store, Jumbo shopping mall, the coast, kauppatori (marketplace) in the Summer, outdoor cafes... I was born in here at Naistenklinikka. I spent over 20 years there, until landing in Chicago. The most I miss of Helsinki is the summer nights, and the excellent ice-cream by Movenbick or Fazer.
