Helsinki's best value

I stay at the HEO Hostel....Kirstinkatu 1 00530 Helsinki, Finland 09 774 2420
its an old college dorm with suites and a shared kitchen in each suite. I believe its tram #2 from the train station(not sure, its been awhile). It was only $30(USD)in 2004. Its something like $50 now. Free internet...grocery store across the street...breakfast available. In a city where a cheap hotel room is over $100...this hostel was a Godsend. There is also a popular hostel called Stadion...but it isnt anywhere near as good.

Unique Quality: It used to be a college dorm...very convenient. Tramstops close by. The best feature? The people I met there! We swapped travel stories, tips and had a GREAT time! There is even a theme park with roller coasters nearby.

gone with the wind

This Hostel hasn't been existing for several years according to local residents. I made up all the way for nothing. The building looks like a church and is nowadays used for other purposes (I saw kids going in and out).

Unique Quality: perfect for praying

the best hostel Ive ever stayed in

This hostel is first-rate! I recently spent twelve days here. This hostel has unlimited Internet, kitchen facilities and a VERY good staff! There is an Aleppa grocery store literally 20 steps across the street, and there are trams (3b/3t/8/1a) all within a three-minute walk. A single room is only 26 euros, and in Helsinki that's a hot-steaming deal!!

Unique Quality: How to reach Heo Hostel…

1)…from railway station

Because we are only 3 km from city center, it’s not a bad idea to walk here. At the same time you’ll see some parts of beautiful Helsinki, and get a little idea about the city. With a map it’s easy to find us, don’t worry.

If you are tired and don’t fancy walking that much, take a metro (aka underground aka tube aka subway) from railway station. You’ll recognize metros by the sign M, in railway station you just walk down the stairs and you are there. Once you are in metro, head eastwards, which means towards Mellunmäki or Vuosaari stops.

Third stop is called Sörnäinen, and that’s your stop. Pop up from metro tunnel and you’ll be in the begin of a street called Helsinginkatu (check from your map). Walk along Helsinginkatu about 900 m and you’ll see a cross street called Kirstinkatu. Take left and after 50 m you’ll see a church-looking building (which actually works as a church as well!) on your left side. Press the door bell of that building and step in, welcome to our hostel!

Metro ticket costs 1.40 € (summer 2002) and metros are running between 5.40 am and 11.25 pm.

2)…from airport

The airport of Helsinki is about 20 km from city center. Easiest way to come to our hostel is to take a taxi. Unfortunately I don’t have an idea how much it would cost, but of course you can ask taxi driver, they’ll know.

Plan B is to take bus number 615, which leaves straight outside of international terminal. BEFORE you take the bus, get a map. THEN, go inside the bus (you might have to wait 5-15 minutes for the bus) and stay there for about 25 minutes. Ask bus driver to tell you when you are in Sörnäinen, and then step out. Look at the map, you are in corner of two streets, Helsinginkatu and Hämeentie. Do as told before in ”…from railway station” –chapter and feel welcome to enter our hostel!

Bus ticket costs 3.00 € (summer 2002). Buses operate from the airport between 6.06 am and 1.06 am.

3)…from harbours

Most of the ferrys come to the area of Eteläsatama (South Harbour), you can find three terminals there. The area is nearby Kauppatori, which is quite a big market-place. Take a tram 3B on the corner of Kauppatori (look your map again…) and stay there for about 10 minutes. When you see a sport field with soccer and baskeball players on your right side, press stop-button and look at your map. You are now almost in the corner of Helsinginkatu and Läntinen Brahenkatu. Walk 50 m back to Helsinginkatu, take right, walk 100 m and take left to Kirstinkatu. 50 m and you’ll see our hostel, welcome!

If you are not sure when to step out from the tram, you can ask anyone on a tram. Almost everyone here in Finland speaks enough English to help you. Dont feel shy to ask!

The other harbour is called Länsisatama (West Harbour). The easiest way from there to hostel is to walk to Itämerenkatu (about 600 m, and once more, you’ll need a map), where tram no. 8 leaves. That tram will stop almost in front of our hostel. If you fall from the map, ask people to tell you when the tram is in front of Helsingin Urheilutalo and step out then. Walk back 50 m, take left, walk 50 m and you are here!

Tram ticket costs 2.00 € (summer 2002).

Do you think you can find here now? Of course you can! Welcome!

If you want to ask something about hostel, (location, facilities etc. etc.) Helsinki, (there is no polar bears here, it’s a lie), Finland (the country of original Santa Claus, the other ones are just poor copies) or something else, please don’t hesitate to do it. We’ll answer your questions as soon as possible and as honestly as we can.
