Not disappointing...

After reading the different opinions of other members about the hotels in Helsinki, I decided to stay in Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, and I was not disappointed.

The staff were friendly and helpful. They suggested places to visit and helped me with directions.

I had a single room which was big. I had a sofa in my room and a great view of the rail station. The room was really clean, bed covers, sheets, pillows all very clean and smelled fresh! I thought that because this was a fairly old hotel, the carpets would be old and dirty, but they were not! I was impressed. The bathroom was fairly big and new. There wasn't a bath but the shower is really good.

The breakfast choice was quite extensive...hot "finnish" dishes, a choice of cold meat, cheese, bread, cereals, fruits, youghurts, you couldn't ask for anything more. You get the view of the city centre from the restaurant.

They do have sauna, but I didn't try it out.

They have a bar/restaurant downstairs but I didn't try that out as well...it was busy though on the saturday night.

Another thing that I liked about the Hotel is that they have a facility for their guests who want to leave their luggage behind (upon checking out) to have a wander around the city before going somewhere. In my case, my train was at 1:00 and I checked out at about 11, So instead of leaving my things in my room, I left them in the luggage room. Of course all things are left at the owner's risk, but I left my laptop (and there were a number of laptops, as well there) and I still have it to this day...

Would highly reccommend this hotel...good value, service is good, and very nicely located...just opposite the train station.

Good and comfortable hotel

Sokos Hotel Vaakuna is a good value hotel, part of the Sokos Hotel chain. Its location in the center near the railwaystation and sights is ideal for shopping and sightseeing. The hotel is also suitable for both business and leisure travellers.

Vaakuna is quite a modern hotel for a Sokos hotel and has a good breakfast in the restaurant on the tenth floor. We had an inva/allergy room, because the hotel was on full capacity. Well, the room was huge and very clean, it had parquet floors (I hate wall-to-wall carpets), individually adjustable air-conditioning, big bathroom with heated floors and a minibar with a good, reasonably priced selection of drinks. The beds were also electrically adjustable, but somehow reminded me of a hospital, because they looked just like hospital beds. There are two restaurants, a coffee shop and a night club also in the hotel.

As I mentioned in the beginning, the location of the hotel is great for shopping and sightseeing and of course for transport, but be warned that at night time the area is far from inviting. The railwaystation side of the hotel (where the hotel entrance is) is filled with drunken and intimidating young gangs especially at weekends, which makes the location less pleasant.

A Great Hotel in the City Centre

Great near luxury hotel accomodation right next to the Helsinki main railway station! This 4 star hotel has great facilities for your stay. Single and double rooms. Superior rooms and suites also available. All rooms include cable TV, minibar, phone, hair dryer and ironing equipment. Internet access through TV. Rooms are clean and nicely furnished. Hotel also provides room service, free quest sauna and a quick laundry service.

Unique Quality: In the 10th floor of this hotel is the recently opened restaurant Loiste. Set in the terrace, you can enjoy a view over Helsinki while eating gourmet food! In the 10th floor, there is also a big, luxury sauna you can rent. Hotel also has a cafe, Coffee house, and a relaxed but classy restaurant/bar Memphis.

Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, Scandic Marski or Scandic Simonkentta?

by ChrissyMoog

Any suggestion which the best hotel among these 3 to stay?

Thanks

Scandic Simonkenttä is a new hotel and if you ask me, better then the two others.

I agree, choose the cheapest one. They are all within a stone's throw from each other.

The question was not about the cheapest but for the best option. Not every traveller is on the budget, sometimes it worth to pay a bit more for the better.

Well, I have seen the rooms in Vaakuna and Scandic so I can say for sure, the new Scandic Simonkenttä is much nicer.
And I don't want to write here my opinion of Marski hotel, it might be deleted ;-)

Nice? No thanks.
My choice here is the Hilton Kalastajatorppa, nice peaceful place by the sea, great for romantic walk to Seurasaari, night swimming in the summer etc ;-)

Hello,

Yes, it has. It is called Klaus K and situated actually on Bulevardi, just next to Erottaja.

Q: Do busses run to the airport 24/7? If not, what time do they start? "I need to get to the airport by 6 AM on Sunday (so I probably need to get on the bus around 5:30 AM), will the 615 or the Finnair..."

A: "I walked down to where the 615 departs from but I didn't see any type of time-schedule listed anywhere. :/"
