Porvoo is full of history dating back to Medieval times and beyond. The Hotel Haikko Manor, Spa & Conference Center's history dates back to the time of 1362 when it was owned by a Dominican Monastary of Vyborg (Russia). Sometime later it became one of the grand "manor" houses of Finland and it was during the time when Finland was the Grand Duchy of Russia when Haikko's history became entertwined with the Russian Imperial family. Often members of the Russian Imperial family, the Romanovs, visited Haikko during the summers and while cruising in the Finnish Archipelago. Wladimir, son of Grand Duke Kiril, was born in Porvoo when the family was fleeing the Russian Revolution of 1917. Wladimir returned to Haikko Manor in 1991 to celebrate his birthday at the Manor.
Always in the center of history and high society, Haikko Manor was purchased in 1965 by the Vuoristo family and converted into the grand hotel it is today. Its elegant rooms are divided among several buildings. It has more choices for indulging your appetite than I can mention here; some of the notable dining rooms are the Romanov Dining Room, the Manor House Dining Room, the Louis Sparre Room, and the Spa Cafe.
Rooms in the Spa Hotel begin at 90 Euros PER PERSON (depending on the season) for a double, with breakfast at the Manor House included, as well as use of the Yorokobi Wellness Pools and fitness center. Expect extra charges for additional persons and suites. Single Supplement charge is 40 Euro.
Rooms in the Manor House itself begin at 129 Euros PER PERSON (depending on the season) including breakfast ; special packages including more meals or options may be a better choice for the money if available. Manor House rms. provide robes, slippers, TV, mini-bar, 7 rooms have balconies. All rooms expected to have wide-screen TV & internet connections by 2006.
This hotel is a special place for those whose budgets can accommodate some extravagances, but the memories will probably out weigh the drain on your wallet.
Unique Quality: The Manor House is set in deep woods and near waterfront as well. The Manor House and restaurants are elegant. All rooms are individually decorated. The Spa is particularly appealing because it offers a wide range of services to reinvigorate yourself through its pools, saunas, therapeutic massages, etc. If you can't stay overnight, at least try the day spa treatments.
Directions: Hotel Haikko Manor, Spa and Conference Center is approximately 48 km from Helsinki and 7km from Old Town Porvoo. Call for brochures & map.
Haikko is a manor converted to hotel, spa and conference center. The place is located near town of Porvoo, some 40 kilometers east from Helsinki.
The old manor house has some hotel rooms and the restaurant. Most of the hotel rooms are in an ugly '70s building near the main house. Nowadays such brutal concrete cubes would not be allowed to be built so near a beautiful manor.
Unique Quality: As we are in Finland, there are plentiful of saunas -- some next to the Porvoo river. The spa has the basic spa treatmens and a Japanese pool section.
One perk is cold room that is frozen to -110C. This ultimate coldness should alleviate pains.
Directions: Check the map from the hotel website.
The manor house is near the sea in the Finnish scenery. No groceries near by, no shopping possibilites near by (only in city center), no other restaurants except their very own one(s?). Quiet location, no traffic noice, just surrounded by forest and a sea.
As a local I have used only their spa services.
In order to get better idea about the Spa please check their homepages, which address you'll find below.
Unique Quality: - Yorokobi Pool Department
- jogging track at summer
- cross country skiing track at winter (in a forest)
- Manoir located in the countryside and yet less than 50mins from Helsinki-Vantaa airport
The Ateljé of Finnish painter Albert EDELFELT (1854-1905) is located only around 500 metres from the spa.
Directions: 8 km's from the city center with regular bus service (2x/hour) to Porvoo. Price around 3 euros one way and the bus takes you directly to city center.
