Maps

Free maps of Tampere’s City center are easy to get. The tourist information (including the airport branch) has them always stocked. However, I also recommend to pick up a leafleft called „Walking Tours in The City Center“. It is not about guided or paid tours, but about three do it yourself walking tours which cover Tampere’s most important sights. This leaflet has a city map which is easier to use for walking tourists (not appropriate for driving though). But the most essential value of this leaflet is basic information about Tampere’s sights. Hopefully, they have that one stocked too when you arrive there.
Walking Around, Pt. 1
by Marpessa
I spent the majority of my day in Tampere just wandering the streets. I was a little nervous about the fact that I only knew about 3 words in Suomi, but I still went out walking. Up and down the main street Hameenkatu, looking in at the shops and businesses along the busy road (It was a Saturday, so a lot of the places were closed).
Then it was time for some lunch. My first Finnish meal... uh, actually it was McDonalds :) Which I bought and then took and sat in the gardens near the Tammerkoski rapids in the city centre. I was surrounded by beautiful green grass, vibrant red flowers, the rapids, factory chimney stacks... it was very picturesque.

Musta makkara - Black sausage
by akkipaa
Musta makkara is a type of blood sausage. It is a local food speciality in Tampere, Finland and is traditionally eaten with lingonberry jam. When buying musta makkara, it is customary to specify the amount of money to spend instead of weight, length or number of pieces. Many Finns who are not native to Tampere refuse to eat the black sausage, those tight caped...
The only right place to by Musta makkara is the Tammela market place and Tapola's kiosk.

Walking Around, Pt. 2
by Marpessa
In the late afternoon I started to stroll down Hämeenpuisto and just generally walking around the area. Walking past Hämeenpuisto to the Pyynikin Kirkkopuisto, which is part garden, part cemetery. In front of the church there, there is a nice fountain and flower bed.
After that I headed towards Eteläpuisto. A beautiful garden with sculptures, green hills, tall thin trees and excellent view of the lake Pyhäjärvi. There were paths to walk around the lake, but I only went a little way along them. I passed an area where people were playing mini golf and could hear sounds of music in the distance (although I am not sure what this was from). Along the shore of the lake were many colourful little boats. It was a very relaxing place to walk around on a warm summer evening.
