Tampere on a Sunday

by sayon85

I plan to be in Tampere on Sunday July 11. I will check the area around the university because I might go study there in a year as an exchange student. I realize there won't be much activity around the university on a Sunday but how about other activities on a Sunday in Tampere? Will small stores in downtown be open? How about the department stores? How about museums?

Hello,
I visited Tampere a few weeks ago..There will be places open ,the department store Stockmann for sure(with their summer sale going on).
I noticed there is something very Finnish: a sauna in a place called Rauhaniem(www.rauhaniemi.net),also open on Sundays.
THe weather forecast is good! it's goin to be over 20 Celsius,so you will have a nice stay.
Plenty of room to leave your luggage at the Tampere Raiay station lockers (was it 4 euros,I think).
Sorry about my typing: I broke my laptop keyboard a very long time ago. Before I get a new laptopI will have to suffer with too many typos and letters missing.
regards,
Soili

Actually they are promised to have +30c here at sunday :)

Koskikeskus shopping-centre will be open at here:
http://www.koskikeskus.fi/web/28002/13 and most of big shops, Stockman, Anttila, Sokos.. I belive that most of small ones are closed outside Koskikeskus anyway. (there can be some open, but many of them are owned by one person, so if they would be open, they might not have any free day at the week..)Shops are not allowed to open before 12 o´clock at sunday,so maybe you might want to see the university first ( I don´t know anything about how it is open) in the morning and then visit the shops.
All the museums are open here at sunday (at least all I know, and I think I know most of them, because I love museums),

If you like to see old houses with little shops the Tallipiha will be open also. You can go and buy Finnish handmade chokolade for example:
http://www.tallipiha.fi/frontpage.html

If you want to go to nature inside the town, maybe you might want to visit Viikinsaari:
http://www.tampere.fi/english/cultureandmuseums/culture/viikinsaari.html

For some reason, many cafes are closed at sundays, but restaurants are mainly open.

Lumous gothic-festival is going on (so don´t be surpriced to meet lots of people using black or neon-colored-clothes here, and maybe looking little different in other ways too.It is the biggest gothic-festival in Finland) and some concets at Amurin työläismuseikortteli and Tuomiokirkko (the Dom) for example.

There are tens of exhibitions, some of them are free, like this one I might like myself:

And by the way: Famous waffle-cafe is open:

Travel Tips for Tampere

Aleksanteri Church

by Pomska

Aleksanteri Church is situated near the Stockmann department store. It's called the New Church because it was originally built to replace the Old Church which was the most important place of worship in Tampere. The building is Neo-Gothic and the name comes from Tsar Alexander II. The church has gone two through two large restoration processes and now it's restored again.

Bit traditional, but:
1) Eat mustamakkara
2) Go to watch Ice-hockey Oh, so many. I spent my university time there, met my best friends, my girlfriend and everything. First warm day in the spring and visit to Särkänniemi, Wappu of course, Bommarit=student parties, dialekt of Tampere, mustamakkara.

Tourist Information and Orientation

by Airpunk

Tampere is well-quipped for tourists with an excellent tourist information office in the train station and a small branch at the airport. The city branch even has two computers where you can have internet access for free. However, you are friendly asked to give space to other costumers if you are using a computer for a long time.
Maps are available for free at the tourist office, but even when it is closed, there is no problem to orientate yourself in Tampere. With exception of the parks in the Northwest and Southwest, you’ll usually not be farther away than 15 minutes from the Tammerkoski. Signs for important places are found everywhere in the city.

1st cup of coffee

by Lalique

Finally! We are in Tampere! The weather is great and we are ready to explore the city but 1st of all.... yeeesss! coffee!
The 1st cup on Tampere grounds, hmmmm, strange but coffee here doesn't differ from that in Helsinki.....

The best choice to have a 1st cup of Tampere coffee is to go to the cafe Strindberg which is on the ground floor of Scandic hotel, which is in turn, just accross the road from the Railway Station.
