We stayed in a chalet type log...
Slavonic
  • By Slavonic on August 26, 2002
  • We stayed in a chalet type log cabin about halfway between Ruka and Kuusamo. Watch out, taxis will cost alot and its about 1 mile to the nearest bus stop. The cabin was massive, and decked out with heated floors, a sauna etc. top notch.
free to those who can afford it...(dads timeshare!)

    Helsinki has plenty of youth...
    anupamr
  • By anupamr on August 26, 2002
  • Helsinki has plenty of youth hostels for the traveler-on -a-budget during the summer. These are mostly clean, nice places to stay at and meet people from around the world, and they dont cost the earth, unlike most other accomodation in Helsinki. Visit http://www.hostels.com/fi.html for more info.
An average of around US$12 per night

    Accommodation in Finland
  • Satisfaction:
  • FinElina
  • By FinElina on November 18, 2004
  • In general, accommodation in Finland is very expensive, as many other things compared to southern or eastern Europe. If you don't want to waste all your money, try to avoid the hotels in the city centre. They are the most expensive ones and yet no better than the same hotels a bit further from the centre.
Try to find some hostels, inns or little hotels to stay in.

If you, however, decide to stay in a hotel, especially a bigger one, they almost always have the possibility to try the sauna (includes a swimming pool use)! It may not be as good as the original countryside sauna but an experience anyway..
The hotel chains usually offer finnish food specialities, like the Carelian pastries for breakfast.

    Euro Hostel: Euro Great

  • This is the first time that I have stayed here at the Euro Hostel.
I paid the 10 Euro deposit for the fridge key which you get back on the day you check out.
It is in a nice part of Helsinki and I enjoyed my stay there that much that I have booked for September.
The number 4 tram stops just around the corner from here and it is only a few minutes walk to the Market Square.

Stayed here again in September for 6 nights. I would book again.

Free morning Sauna is included in the price.

    Fenno Apartments: Apartments best
  • Satisfaction:
  • ellierae
  • Updated By ellierae on September 23, 2007
  • The first two times that I went to Finland I stayed at the Hotel Anna. So last year I decided to stay in apartments for a change. the Fenno Apartments are roughly 10 minutes away from Helsinki on the 3T tram.
I was able to buy food and try Finnish food for a change. I would go back to those apartments again and they worked out alot cheaper than 3 star hotels, and you have that freedom of coming and going as and when you pleased.

I stayed in these apartments again in September 2007.

Free morning sauna and if you wanted to have breakfast with other tourists you can go down to the canteen, which I did not use. There is a hob, microwave and a fridge in your room.

    Find a Spot: Low-Budget (requires a tent)
    Stargher
  • Updated By Stargher on November 17, 2002
  • The finnish law allows you to put your tent almost anywhere. Find a suitable spot somewhere quiet and set up your tent. This form of accommodation doesn't have any luxuries, but it doesn't cost a thing either. You can take a swim and a shower at a swimming hall and most of them even give a student discount (the cost is about 1,5-4 e for 2 hours, but you can be as long as you like)

  • Theme: Campground
  • Directions: Just make sure your spot isn't in the city center or if it is know that the blue-uniformed police officers are quite understanding (and know english) and you will not be attained...

    HOTEL KAMP: FINLAND'S BEST HOTEL
  • Satisfaction:
  • thinking
  • By thinking on June 17, 2005
  • Even if it was not one of Europe's best luxury hotels, the Kamp would be worth a stop for its associations with Jean Sibelius and his artist friends. It is almost 50 years since the composer's death and yet he remains a looming figure with whom every Finnish musician must contend, either by accepting, rejecting, ignoring, or just bemoaning his prominence. Not only is Sibelius an icon on the currency, but he also acts as the country's permanent ambassador by being its first, and still most, internationally recognized name.
"If you asked who is the most important figure in Finnish history, 8 of 10 Finns would say Sibelius," says Vanska. "In no other country would a composer rank so high."
Concerts in Finland often include a programming nod to Sibelius, even if it's only a song (he wrote one about the Kamp) or piano piece.

It is just off Esplanade Park and close to the city's principal musical institutions - Finlandia Hall (designed by Alvar Aalto), the National Opera House and the Sibelius Academy. For those so inclined, the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (Stephen Holl's building, opened in 1998) and the Ateneum (the national art gallery, situated opposite Saarinen's train station) are also close by. The hotel, which dates back to 1887, has a selection of indoor saunas and superb restaurants.
