Hotels in Kuopio
by serpentine
Hi!
I'm planning to visit Kuopio in August. I will spend three days there and I would like to know if someone could recomend me a cheap hotel/hostel. I've checked up a couple but I didn't get a really good impression. Any ideas?
Also: What is the weather like at the end of August?
And could also someone recomend me activities or things I could visit during my stay in Kuopio?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Natalia.

Hi! Did you check http://www.kuopioinfo.fi/english/perussivut/majoitus/hostellit_matkustajakodit_retkeilymajat.php ? If you are looking for something cheap and in the centre, you could try http://www.hostellihermanni.net/ where the surroundings are beautiful yet you can walk to the centre and sights. Puijon Maja has the nature conservation area right next to it and the distance to the centre is not bad. I have also heard good things about the new summer hotel Lokki, but it will be closed in August already.
The weather at the end of August can be lovely! - or then not... But anyway it is the time of forest berries, mushrooms, fresh potatoes; and usually warm lakes for swimming.
What to do in Kuopio depends on what you are interested in, so it's hard to answer that. Check e.g. the events on KuopioInfo pages, maybe there is something interesting!

Hi!
Thank you both for the information. I finally booked a room in the hotel Puijo Maja. Could someone tell me if it is really far from the city centre? It is located in Hiihtäjäntie street, 11.
I've been visiting Kuopio websites to get ideas on what to do and it seems you can do interesting thins around the area. Is there any tourist office in Kuopio where I could get information on what to do / things to visit while I'm there?
Thanks again for your information!
Cheers!

Hi Natalia,
Some more tips for you:
-Puijo Observation Tower is "the must".
-Visit Kuopio Museum. They have a good exhibition about Finnish culture, history and nature. You even see the only mammoth in Finland there.
-Take a lake cruise. Very beautiful!
-Taste "kalakukko" fish pie at the marketplace. Kalakukko is a famous provincial speciality.
-Visit Rauhalahti Spa. There is a large tropically warm indoor swimming pool department there. You can also enjoy a water slide, a jacuzzi (a whirlpool), a hot pool, an outdoor pool, a Finnish sauna (separate saunas for men and women) and a steam room (mixed for men and women) there. More information at www.rauhalahti.fi and www.rauhalahti.com. Sauna information at http://groups.msn.com/FinlandTravelClub/sauna.msnw.

Welcome to Finland,

VOSSIKKA
On the picture at the rear, the orange colored building is Kuopio's Town Hall and the Market Place in full action. At the right is the covered market and in the front the Horse-Carriage or VOSSIKKA which is nowadays a well-known tourist-attraction.
The first *taxis* used to be these Vossikka-carriages 150 years ago! In 1851, the arrival of horse-carriages meant that Kuopio was no longer a small town as it needed local traffic. At the best time there were 80 Vossikka to please and help local people and tourists to get around Kuopio!
In 1921, 'rent-aubomobiles' or taxis replaced gradually the romantic horse-carriages.

Eating Kalakukko (Bread fillid with fish and pork)
by akkipaa
This is an ancient national food prepared and eaten in Savo (eastern part of Finland).
Kalakukko was used as travelers food because it stays edible very long when unopened. Also in medieval times salt was the only way to preserve meat and it was expensive, so with this way you could use all the salt in salt pork. The word kala-kukko means fish-cock (the bird :).
You can use any small fish (shorter than 4 inches). Small scales and spikes don't matter because they soften during the prolonged cooking. The pork is unsmoked.

This was really difficult! To decide in which class this tip belogs. This could be "must see", it is transportation, it's definately a tourist trap, but I choose a local custom.
This used to be one of the best transportation method from 1900 to 1950, but when cars, busses and trains conquored the word the ships remained "a way of life" relief and tourist trap.
You can go to Alahovi wine farm (5€) or to Savonlinna opera festifal by these ships (it takes whole day and 65€) and you can stay overnight in the ship. It is nice to take a dinner-dancing trip (6€) and spend a facinating evening in the lake Kallavesi.
