by Natalya2006

Where can we try winter activities near Mikkeli:
1. Rent skis, sledges
2. Try hasky-safary (for 1-2 hours, short trip)
3. Moto-safary (short trip)
4. Other suggestions

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Travel Tips for Mikkeli

Mikkeli - OK for a day--

by irish147

I have been to Mikkeli about 13 times, and I find this town very downcast city/town. Not allot to do here, but in the winter they get some good snow falls which is great for winter sports. They have a good Ice Hockey team called Jukurit (web link www.jukurit.fi/)
If you like snooker/pool you can have a game in a bar just in the town. But if you want to buy some souvenirs of your visit in Mikkeli /Finland you wont find them here, if you do email asap. This town of Mikkeli has some great views when you go for walks into the woods. But after been here so many times, I have to give this town my No.One vote for the most cheerless town in the world. I think the people are nice, but not allot of people have English in the shops.
(Winter Its gets dark about 2.30PM, Summer long day sometimes 1 or 2AM day light) here are some images from this city/town

The old garden at Kenkävero and women

by Soili

The old placew within the town is called Kenkävero. It's possible to buy textiles and other items, such as dried herbs and delicatessen, at the shop.
If you like gardening, this place offers much to see for you: the garden plants come from this area, they are strong and grow well. Such things as "Burning Love" ( palava rakkaus), the old herbs that can be used for medicinal purposes, the white Midsummer rose with its lovely scent...
My grandmother loved flowers, and I'm very happy to know there's a place in Mikkeli that keeps the gardening tradition of the area alive.
The local supermarkets sell the delicatessen from Kenkävero as well.
Women are veru tightly connected with this old minister's house. The union of MArtta women (Marttaliitto) is an organisation that sees to the wellbeing of women. Its origins are in the countryside but nowadays towns can have their Martta unions as well. In the old days, the women from the union helped the inhabitants by advising them in household matters.

A sweet small town

by Soili

Mikkeli is very much part of my childhood. My mother was born near it, so we ended in spending the childhood summers over there.

Mikkeli is situated on the lake Saimaa. A great place, a very beautiful area. I can vividly remember the words my nephew said, travelling by car for the first time to the area:
"Wau, what a scenery!" He was about 5 years old then.
