Travel Tips for Jyväskylä

Hometown

by kirahvi

Jyväskylä is my hometown, the place I know inside and out. It's the place I love despite its occasional drawbacks, such as the Neste Rally every August, that brings thousands of drunk and badly dressed people into town. (I mean, when did fanny packs make a comeback in the Western world?)

There are a lot of students in Jyväskylä and most of them just move in there for 5 years or so and then leave again. Jyväskylä is a huge transfer point between two stages of life - highschool and full time job - and it seems nigh impossible to find anybody who was actually born there. Well I was!

So tag along, and let me try to show you some of the things that I love about my hometown. And maybe some of those I'm not so fond of, but that might pique your interest!

Jyväskylä

"A summer town?"

I've lived in Jyväskylä for almost eight years. It's one of the numerous Finnish towns that are regarded as a "summer city", meaning that one should only visit them during summer. It's certainly true that a tourist will find it easiest to spend time in Jyväskylä during summer. The pedestrian street (Kävelykatu) has pub and shopping possibilities that are most pleasant at warm weather. It's pleasant to walk, or better, to bicycle, around and pay attention to small details.
