Travel Tips for Kotka

Kotka, a city in the sea

by Gili_S

Kotka (which means "Eagle" in Finnish) is a small town in the south east of Finland.
If you haven’t had any special plan to go there, you don’t really have to, the place can be rather boring if you are alone, However; with a good company on a hot summer day, it just great place for having fun.

Kotka official web site including tourist information available also in English.

Football madness in Kotka

by Jarra

FC KooTeePee (formely KTP est. 1927 and Kotkan Tp est. 1998), a Finnish elite league football team, plays its home matches in the Arto Tolsa areena. The stadium was built in 1952 and renamed after a Kotka football legend in 2000. The capasity of this stadium is around 4600. The homecrowd is said to be one of the best crowds in Finland. I`ve been twice in Arto Tolsa areena and I must disagree. The crowd doesn`t really support their own team. Normally they sit silently or abuse the away team players.

"Kotka - the city by the sea"

Kotka is located in south-east Finland on the Gulf of Finland. Its name, Kotka, was mentioned as far back as 500 years ago, referring to fishermen`s fishing grouds and as the name of a meadow island. Maybe the name was given after a great bird, the eagle, which soared above the iskand defending its nest, or maybe it was the first inhabitant of the island who named it after himself. The sea brought new people into Kotka, including Hans Gutzeit. He gazed around him, seeing the river and knowing the vast forest areas with their straigh-stemmed trees further inland, and also seeing the force of the river carrying logs. He saw a harbour offering easy access for ships. The town was founded in 1878 and the population is now about 56 000. Kotka has the biggest export port in Finland.

"The heart of the city"

Kotkansaari island is the heart of the areally extensive City of Kotka.
