Lapland trip 2006!!

by kimij

"Trip of a lifetime"

Well every year I say ....I'm going to get to Lapland this year and every year I grab the brochures and find a cost! Then the reality hits me... a few days for too much money so I put the dream away for another year, then onr day I was looking on the travel websites and saw several late deals to Lapland that looked good value. To cut a long story short we went!
It truly is a holiday of a lifetime!

"Dream home"

Of course when you say you are going to Lapland you expect a log cabin in the forest! Quite by chance we we were offered this by the travel company for a few more pounds, so we took it!! We stayed in Yllas in the cabins there that use the Snow Elf/Akas hotel for food. The cabins were really great very rustic but warm, cosy and had a private sauna! The hotel was only a few minutes walk from our homes so most nights we got a glimpse of the wonderful northern lights while walking to dinner! There was quite a bit of snow when we got there but during our stay we didn't see one flake fall that was my only fault!!

"activities in the winter"

Fantastic activities on offer here in Lapland! For me just seeing snow everywhere was amazing, But we especially enjoyed hiring snow mobiles for hours on end, there are great tracks to follow! Also the skiing was brilliant, my daughter not only loved it but was really good!
we had small rides on reindeer sleighs,a huski dog experience and walking about on the frozen lake. but of course there are toboggans everywhere and everyone loves to have a good slide about on them!!

Most UK operators will go to Lapland..Thompsons,Cosmos and Canterbury travel to name a few. 4-5 nights is really expensive! when we looked into doing it a couple of years ago it was just as cheap to take 2 weeks in a 5* hotel in Bali! Guess what we went for.....therfore I havent any advisen on lapland!! However I would still love to go! would you like another sister??!! :-) !!

HI JohntheFinn.......You give some great replies here so keep up the good work!!.I've had a look at the cottages at Lomarengas(great site) Just wondering what the conditions are for driving in Finland when really snowy as I would consider coming in winter, and I'm not a rally driver! Also possibly staying near Rovaneimi so how do I then go about some husky or reindeer excursions?? and costs? costs in general in your beautiful country are high!??!
Well I hope to someday come to Finland, especially Lappi thanks for any answers in advance!

Hi
we found that the operator Inghams was really good and quite cheap. We stayed for 7 nights in Yllas and it was fantastic, we went in january so a bit late for father Christmas, but it was still very festive. We stayed in Yllas log cabins which were affiliated to Akas Hotel. Inghams do really good deals but it has to be at least for a week I think. we then booked snowmobile, sking and husky trip as extras. Avoid these operators which just get you there for a day and cram it all and charge you huge amounts. We did not want to come home there is loads to do. Do not be put off by thinking you have to go with a trip that supplies you with thermal clothing, wear normal walking boots and lots of layers and windproof/waterproof outers and a good ear covering hat and warm waterproof gloves and you will be fine. we did not have any fancy gear.
Your sister will love it, we can not wait to return when our little one is abit bigger!
