Matka Borealis: Lovely inn near the Train Station
I remembered this place fairly well because of its unusual name. Makta Borealis means "Travel Northern Light" in Finnish (thanks kimmo_v!). What an appropriate name for a charming little inn! Lizzy and I booked a double room ( 52 euros) with a bathroom and we were given a charming little place that overlooks the forest green.
Leila, the motherly owner, lent a very homey atmosphere to the whole place. She prepares breakfast for all her boarders (breakfast is included in the price) and gives ready tips to local places of interest in her homey little kitchen. Her little inn sees boarders from all over the world. When we were there, we met Italians and Japanese tourists.
Tip Update: I think Leila got a little web savvy, she now has a website which allows online booking!

Guesthouse Borealis: Excellent quality at a low price
We stayed here on two occasions: our first and our last night in Lapland. We had booked a triple room both times, but were upgraded to a double and a double/single use the second time. Staff was very helpful and friendly, the place is clean and quite conveniently located (near the train station). There is a supermarket within walking distance and also the central pedestrian area of Rovaniemi can be reached on foot!
This guest house has singles, doubles and triple rooms. All rates include a lovely breakfast buffet including bread, eggs, cheeses, fish, lunch meats, jams, juice, eggs, coffee, tea or hot chocolate as well as cereals. They have free internet and a kitchen open to all guests. The rooms are very clean and quiet.
We can definitely recommend this place and will stay here again when we return to Rovaniemi!

Camping at the Arctic Circle
Thsi campground is situated in Rovaniemi on Ounaskoski River. Showers and toilets were very clean. You can use one of the five kitchens for free - they are furnished with two rinses, percolators and microwaves.
It takes ten minutes to walk to the centre of Rovaniemi. Santa' Village and the Arctic Circle are 90 min away; or less then ten minutes by car.

Guesthouse Borealis: Near transit stops, a bit further from the rest
When searching for an accommodation in Rovaniemi, our main criteria was location: not only were we arriving in town on the overnight train from Helsinki, but the departure point of the bus to Santa Claus Village was also beside the railway station. In that respect, Guesthouse Borealis was hard to beat, being only a 5-minute walk away.
That being said, Guesthouse Borealis is not only a great place to stay because of its location. The personnel was extremely courteous and efficient. Our room was ready for us when we arrived, even though it was only 8 a.m. We were only too happy to crash there for a couple of hours after not sleeping so much on the train! Room rates were also very reasonable and included a small, unpretentious buffet breakfast.
The only drawback would be the distance from the town centre if you don't have a car. But surely you didn't come all the way to Rovaniemi for its urban environment?
