2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Enough gadgets to keep you going for weeks

You can either book a room in their recently built hotel or the holiday apartments.

The hotel is located adjacent to the main building with restaurants, bars and the luxurious spa, treatments department doing the usual facilials, manicures and pedicures, hairdressers, indoor sports arena and meetings facilities, whereas the aparments are located very nearby. They are surrounded by pine forests and a lake.

The hotel

There are 112 double rooms and four suites in the hotel. The rooms are rather spacious (28 m2) and most of them have a balcony. The rooms are fitted with the usual stuff including TV, telephone, shower, bathrobes, minibar, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, locker and drying cupboard. Suites also have their own sauna and jacuzzi.

The apartments

There are 264 apartments each accommodating 4 to 8 people. They contain enough electronic gadgets to keep you going for weeks and weeks if necessary such as an electric cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, coffeemaker, food mixer, toaster, microwave oven, washing machine, powered drying cupboard, central vacuum cleaning, powered air conditioning, satellite telly, 2 phones, iron (and ironing board), hairdryer and a gas grill. And although you might not use these at home anymore, they still have a video player and a radio-cassette player (how nostalgic!)

All apartments are equipped with a complete set of crockery and cutlery, bed linen, towels, an open fire and they also have two very handy push bikes with which you can ride anywhere you like. The bikes are only available in summer though. It wouldn't be very practical in a meter deep snow, would it? ;-)

Some apartments also have infrared terrace heating (fancy!)

A trip to Vuokatti

by annase

Vuokatti is the ultimate sport and leisure resort in the region. It is located somewhat 40 km away from Kajaani towards the eastern border that Finland shares with Russia. Russia is still about 150km away, so you can't see it, but you're getting close and there are masses of Russian tourist flocking to Vuokatti every year around 7 January which is the date when the Russian celebrate their Xmas (according to the Russian Orthodox Church and the old Julian calendar).

Enough about the Russians, the facilities in Vuokatti include 200 kilometres of cross country skiing tracks, 12 down hill skiing slopes, an indoor ski tunnel, indoor half pipe, luxurious KatinKulta spa, golf course, indoor bowling (with regular disco bowling evenings) and a whole range of accommodation from log cabins to well equipped flats and hotel rooms (It's useful to book well ahead though).

The skiing season runs roughly from December to May. Vuokatti also boasts as being the home of the nationally and internationally recognised sports training institute, as several professional teams from various different countries train there every year.

The KatinKulta Spa and water world hosts a curious speciality called "Sauna World”. This section of the spa has a Turkish, a Roman and a Finnish sauna. It is guaranteed to be a bit of an experience, since they do not actually allow people to wear their swimming costumes in the section. However, there are separate changing rooms, showers, loos and a Finnish sauna and for males and females, so no need to worry!!! Phew.. There is also a special "smoky" sauna outdoors. In practise, it is just a mild steamy sauna, but it does have a distinctive smell of smoke. The sauna is prepared several hours in advance by setting a fire under some stones. When the fire has burnt out, the door is opened and the smoke allowed to escape. The stones will however still continue to provide enough heat for the visitors.

My husband and I will be traveling to Finland at the end of May. We will arrive in Finland on May 22 and are staying at Holiday Club Katinkulta for a week. I am looking for suggestions on the following:
the best way for 4 adults to travel from Helsinki to Katinkulta
the most economical place to rent a car for the week
suggestions on things to do in Katinkulta
grocery stores that are nearby
restaurants that shouldn't be missed

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Do you have address of your hotel? Katinkulta is not a place as far as I know. Its the same if you would ask about Holiday Inn, but where?
Rent a car, Finland is usually very expensive in this, you can try and check major rental companies but usually sixt are the cheaper as often they are in many countries.

I just notice the networks of those hotels and they have one in Vuokatti, if this is your destination, that is over 500 km from Helsinki but it is easy to get there by train. Driving there will take about 6-8 hours. While there, just enjoy the nature and visit near by places and nation parks, no need to travel far to enjoy the great nature.

Hi and welcome to Vuokatti! :)
Like Gili said nature especially our national parks are worth visiting.
In addition to that Vuokatti&Katinkulta is all about sport.
You can find more information about things you can do here from Vuokatti's official travel pages:

I have few tips on my pages and if you have anything to ask, please ask.
I'm a local so I most probably can help. :)

If you like watching sports...Finnish baseball (Pesäpallo) team Sotkamon Jymy plays in the top level and they have to 2 home games 23rd and 25th. It's different than baseball but it might be fun to watch it.
