cheap accomodation in Colmar/surroundings

by Vedma

Hi there!

Me and a friend are going to have a motorbike-trip through Alsace and plan to stop in Colmar.
Can anyone tell me about a not so expensive hotel/youth hostel or private rooms in Colmar or even near Colmar?
Thanks in advance,
Anja

hello,
Apart from one Youthhostel, i dicovered a very nice house in Munster just 20 km from Colmar, they are great small roads in the Munster valley for tours on motorbike and even better you can drive to Munster cheese farms.
We stayed with the haumesser family in munster for a week , price for the top floor apartment is about 350 euros a week but you can stay 3 nights , i think. It is very charming, quite and clean and owners are very helpful.Plenty of parking for the bikes. web site: g.haumesser@free.fr or tel 33 (0) 3 89 77 49 21

Thank you Melody and sorry for answering so late but I was offline due to travelling.... :-)
The accomodation thing is fixed now for June, I will stay in a nice little hotel near Col de Bussang and we will do daily trips from there as a base camp. :-)

Thanks a bunch!
Anja

Travel Tips for Colmar

Flammekueche

by breughel

Alsatian "Flammekueche" or "Tarte Flambée" is similar to a pizza as it is baked in an open wood-burning oven.
It is a thin-crust pizza made with "fromage blanc", sliced onions and smoked lardoons.
As with pizza there are a number of variations. The cheese can also be gruyere, there can be mushrooms added.

My favoured one contains Munster cheese which gives a quite powerful taste to the Flammekueche. The problem is that restaurants serving this type of tarte flambée smell so strongly that they might cause environmental problems!
Tourist from overseas shouldn't leave the Alsace without trying Munster cheese. This is unique.
There are also sweet Flammekueche with apples and Calvados alcohol.
Please note that not all restaurants serve Flammekueche all the day; some serve it only in the evening.

For the wine I suggest a Pinot Gris. This type is excellent for Flammekueche and Munster cheese.

The Greatest Painting in Northeast France

by hquittner

The Issenheim Altar was made between 1512-16 by Mathis Gothart (known as Grunewald) and was the Altar piece of the of a convent following the rule of Saint Augustine (the Antonites) in that town. In 1793 the set of works was moved to the place Unterlinden and installed in the ex-Dominican chapel which in 1849 became a museum containing the Grunewald masterpiece and works by Schongauer and others. The altar is nicely detached so that one can move among the several wings and approximate the progression of a suppliant. Starting from the outside of the retable which has three panels with a two panel predella Entombment past the second level made up of a set of four panels (originally in one group of 4) now shown as two pairs of important large pictures and on to the third level at the rear with lateral paintings and a central tryptich of sculptured wooden figures while below there is a carved predella of Jesus and the Apostles.

Customs House

by rexvaughan

This is a magnificent 15th Century structure with a finely designed tile roof and a host of cupolas, gables and dormers. It was originally used by delegates of the 10 leading cities of Alsace (Decapolis) to discuss issues of commerce (and probably politics and women). Walk all around to appreciate the beauty, variety and richness of the architecture.

Colmar during Christmas time

by gueto

This is the best time to go visit Colmar. The town shows its best face for a fairy-tale like moment. The streets are full of people who gather around little shops where you can buy presents. The shops are placed in "marches de noel "or Christmas street markets". It start in November 25 to December 31.This festive period blends harmoniously with the wonderful lighting designed to enhance the town’s heritage,

As you walk you can smell the tasty "vin chaud"or hot wine. It is worth giving a try at it, specially because it gets really cold during that time. You can try as well the famous cake called "pain d'epices". It's a cake with different spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and anis. Simply delicious!!!

Inside of St. Martin's Church

by hquittner

St. Martin's church is moderately long but is rather narrow. Although the main part of the church was essentially finished by 1300, the choir was remade in 1350. Over the next centuries valuable furnishings were placed inside, such as a fine Crucifixion of the 14C in the absidial chapel, a large wood carving of the Last Supper of the 15C and a fine organ built in 1770.
