I would like the hours of Masses at L'Eglise St. Martin in Colmar

Re: Lorraineusa

I checked all the web sites I could find for Mass times and had no luck. You may find it easier to check the church when you are there. You will want to go before Mass anyway to take photos so just check Mass times while visiting for touristic reasons. It is a large city church and a cathedral so there will be at least one and probably several Masses.

We've discovered in smaller towns in France, often several towns share a priest so each town will not have Mass every Sunday. There aren't enough priests for all the parishes so they visit several churches one Sunday, several more the next Sunday and continue this rotation. Usually each church will have the town and time posted so if you are staying in one town, you may have to drive quite a way to find a nearby town for Sunday Mass.

You can also ask at your hotel, but we've also been given incorrect information many times so we go directly to the church and find the time and place posted at the church. Another failsafe method is to get up and ready for church. Then wait until the church bells go crazy. It is time to head for church. Obviously this only works if there is a church having Mass that particular Sunday in that particular town. ;^)

Often town Tourist Offices will have church information.

Enjoy Colmar and don't miss the Isenheim Altarpiece at the Unterlinden Museum. The entire museum is very nicely done and they have free audio guides which makes it easier to appreciate what you are seeing.

Travel Tips for Colmar

Colmar O.T. (Office of Tourism)

by Kate-Me

A handy tip for Colmar - make one of your first stops the Information Centre - maps, information, and guided tour bookings of nearby castles, etc.
I found the staff quite helpful there and they did speak English.

The Address is:

Shop Signs

by robertbaum

Have you ever bothered to look at Shop signs?

Here in Colmar they form part of the historical street scenes. Not only the buildings itself are old and worthwhile to see, but also all the small details.

Have you ever heard of Hansi?

When you are in Colmar or any other touristic place in Alsace, you can by his handdrawn street scenes as postcards everywhere. Look closely and you will discover, that some of the Shop signs were designed by him.

Barque (small boat) ride on Petite Venise Canals

by Kate-Me

After our large lunch of Rosti and Choucroute, Madeleine and I weren't really capable of walking around Colmar for a while, so we decided now was the best time to go on our little boat ride of the canal. The boats were wooden (not much larger than a row boat) and very small - holding a maximum of 9 people with the guide at the back operating the tiny (and not noisy) outboard motor. We thoroughly enjoyed our quiet little trip down the canals, first down a leafy end with leafy residential gardens either side, then we turned around and went down the more touristy part with restaurants and colourful buildings, very nice indeed.

The cruise was about 5 or 6 Euros for approx 25 minutes.

Maison Pfister

by breughel

Every evening, going to our usual restaurant at Koïfhus, we passed on this corner of the Rue des Marchands.
Each time I tried a photo in the dark without tripod; most are blurred, a few are acceptable. As apparently all photos here are on day time I will add a few at night with the Christmas illuminations.
The "Maison Pfister" is probably the most original house of Colmar and a symbol of the town. Interesting that a hat maker, Ludwig Scherer, could have such a wealthy house build in 1537! Must have been a profit full job in that time.

===========================

by dinhyen

The House of Heads is everybody's favorite Colmar attraction. The fascinating looking building was built in 1609 by an affluent merchant, who later became the town's mayor. The gable is topped with a statue of an Alsatian cooper by Bartholdi.
