Travel Tips for Eguisheim

Perfect medieval wine village

by Beausoleil

"This was Plan B and it was better than Plan A . ."

We started for the Ecomusée of Alsace only to find it oddly open and closed at the same time. We walked right in but no one was there and nothing was open. We left trying to decide what to do and I remembered hearing Eguisheim was one of the Plus Beaux Villages of France so found it on our map and we started off.

It is southwest of Colmar and well signposted.

It is beautiful, peaceful, friendly and lots of fun.

"Storks abound"

We had fun looking for storks in Alsace . . . as we always do. Eguisheim was no disappointment. If you look closely at the photo below, there is a stork nest on top of the clock tower. It was inhabited by a happy stork couple and a very hungry baby. With binoculars you can watch them feed the baby. We also were delighted to see the storks swoop overhead looking for more food.

I got some great stork photos here and will try to post them in a stork album below.

"A bustling main square"

This is the main square in the center of the town. We parked outside and walked the entire spiral within the old walls. There are Burgundian roofs, restaurants, shops, fountains, kids running home from school, storks and all manner of diversions.

It's a beautiful and fun town. Of all the towns we visited this trip, this may have been our favorite . . . although I hate choosing favorites since they are all lovely. The joy here was the town wasn't crowded. Riquewihr is beautiful but is so overrun with tourists, it's hard to walk in the streets.
