Travel Tips for Mulhouse

Fritz Schlumpf & car-racing

by globetrott

Fritz Schlumpf took part in car-races , mostly with his blue Bugatti, shown on my picture.

Fritz and Hans Schlumpf lost the father rather early and were raised by their mother in Alsace, the home of the Bugatti-manufactory. When the former factory of Bugatti was closed down, Fritz Schlumpf bought the whole factory-building including all spare-parts, tools etc.

TODAY Volkswagen builds new Bugatti-cars again, maybe the most expensive cars your may buy and with a top speed far bejond of 300 km/h.

SCOTT Tricar 1923

by globetrott

This quite strange car was built in Great Britain mainly for the army to transport canons.

But a small series was also built for private use, and 5 cars of that strange cabriolet have survived.

You might get the feeling, that one of the wheels is missing, but in fact this is the way it was constructed.

---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------

Some technical details about this strange car :
The engine had 2 cylindres and 573ccm
12HP and a top-speed of 80km/h

Did you ever see such a skinny Harley ??

by globetrott

Everybody had to start somewhere in the early days before the war, and would you have believed, that this skinny motorcycle is a real Harley Davidson ??

In fact it is, it is just a pity, I could not find any more infos about it in the museum, nor in my books.

It is just standing there, surrounded by lots of old vintage-cars and it even has a side-wagon fixed to it.

Mercedes-Benz 540K - 1936

by globetrott

This type of Mercedes was mainly famous for its elegant design.
All cars in the museum of Mulhouse look like they are brand new, and almost all of them are still fully able to drive the speed that is indicated , simply because Fritz Schlumpf employed plenty of mechanics just in order to restore all cars completely.
And they were NOT allowed to talk about what they were doing behind the closed doors, before the museum should be opened.

-------- ------- ------- ------- -------- ------- -------

Some technical details about this
MERCEDES-BENZ 540K of 1936
the engine had 8 cylindres and 5401 ccm
180HP and a top-speed of 170km/h

MULHOUSE

"Cité de l'Automobile - getting there"

One of the main reasons to visit Mulhouse is to view the marvelous Cité de l'Automobile with The Schlumpf Collection.
The museum is accessed by either tram or bus from the Central Railway Station : Gare SNCF à Mulhouse. We used the tram.
Tickets for the tram are available from a dispensing machine outside the station or from a booth in the Arrival Hall of the Station.(open 7h30 - 12h15 and from 13h45 - 18h30)

Ticket costs
One way : € 1,30
Duo (return trip for 1 person or one way for 2 person : € 2,40
Family (3-5 persons) Return: € 3,90
24 hour pass : € 4
Website ticket costs

The journey takes about eight minutes along the “Red” Tram Line 1. 5th stop is “Musee de l’Auto”.
After leaving the tram at that stop, You should be able to see the Red building housing the Collection.

Basically the Musee is open - 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. 3 April to 29 October (hours may be reduced during winter).
You can do a self guided tour of the collection using the audioguide (available in 6 languages) supplied with entry fee:
Entry National Automobile Museum €10.5
National Automobile Museum + Cité du Train combined €17.5
read more.

The tram has continuous overhead digital display of next stop info.
Even I could work the ticket dispensing machine. I used cash to purchase the tickets.
