Travel Tips for Mulhouse

The Schlumpf dynasty

by globetrott

Fritz Schlumpf , a millionair from Switzerland bought a production of worsted in Mulhouse in 1935 and made it a part of his imperium of several such productions.

But his main interest was the collection and restoration of vintage cars and he took part in car-races as well. In 1970 Mr.Schlumpf had around 2000 employees in his several factories, and while the business was getting worse and worse, he invested all of his private money, and the money from the factories into his dream of the very best museum of great vintage cars in Mulhouse.

Panhard-Levassor Coach Dynavia 1948

by globetrott

This is a quite unique car, as it needs only 3,5 litres fuel for 100km.
Just imagine to have invented such a car already in the year 1948 - even though it looks a bit funny - and still it seems impossible to have such an engine and perfect aerodynamique today...

When you click on my picture, you will see that it has only one headlight in the middle of the car.

================================
For those, who are interested in the technical details :
The engine had just 2 cylindres and 605 ccm.
It gave the car 28HP and the top-speed was 130km/h

De Dion-Bouton Limousine DH - 1912

by globetrott

What a sweet, tiny car ! Quite unusual for a De Dion-Bouton is the limousine-body and the soft windows ( Plexiglas is the german expression for "soft window" and I did not know that material existed already in 1912).
When you go regularely to meetings of vintage-car-owners you will see quite a lot of De Dion-Bouton dating back to 1904 etc. that have survived more than a century now and are still working fine in ralleys and competitions.

Rolls Royce Silver Ghost 1921

by globetrott

In the collection of the brothers Schlumpf you will also find some great, old cars made by Rolls Royce.
The Silver Ghost is such an example and it is funny to learn that the company Rolls Royce NEVER spoke about the HP / Horsepower of their cars, they simply said with a lot of "understatement" - the car has "sufficient power".

Hispano-Suiza J12 of 1934

by globetrott

What I liked most about his rare car is the great figure-head :
It is a crane and always looks really great !
The french company Hispano-Suiza was well known for its production of airplanes and reliable & fast luxury limousines at its time before WW II.

It is a pity that the lights in the special hall for the most expensive cars is not really sufficient for good photography, and to flash is forbidden of course :-((

Hispano-Suiza J12 Coupe Chauffeur of 1934:
the engine had 12 cylindres and 9424 ccm
