Travel Tips for Mulhouse

The mother of the Schlumpf-brothers

by globetrott

Both brothers Schlumpf had a special relation to their mother and dedicated even some sort of an "altar" to her in the entrance-hall of the museum.
Everybody entering the museum has to pass by her - a bit too much of a dedication in my opinion - But I very much liked the small children-cars around it. Funny to see these 2 small children-Bugattis, with a real electric engine and full functions.
These kind of cars were made by Ettore Bugatti for sons of millionairs and quite a lot have been sold.
Hassan I, king of Morocco bought one of them for his sons.

Panhard & Levassor X86 - 1953

by globetrott

The body of this great car was made totally of alminium and had a total weight of just 650 kg (b.t.w. a VW-beetle had around 900kg).
The engine had just 745 ccm and needed just a small amount of fuel.

Because of its funny design this car was also nick-named "Louis XV" by the french people - take a look: somehow this car seems to have a face with a smile !

The car that is shown in the museum is the one of Mrs. Panhard.

Audi Torpedo E21/78 - 1924

by globetrott

This car is the only car that has survived for the series of Audi E21/78.
The highly "wind-proof" radiator and the Torpedo-body are quite typical for the early twenties in Europe.
The chassis was made by Audi, the body was made by Erdmann & Rossi.

Bugatti 44 Coupe - 1927

by globetrott

The Bugatti 44 Coupe was a quite popular car, as the size was not very big from outside, and the car was easy to drive and park everywhere - a problem that existed obviously already in the 1920s...

On the other hand it had a lot of space INside the car.

Isn't it funny to see the different colors of that car - looks a bit like a driving hatbox...

Depends on how you look at it

"Spliting Hairs"

OK, this doesn't really count. I was born in Mulhouse and was only there for about two years before going to the U.S. I was meaning to take a day trip to Mulhouse when I was in Paris, but never got around to it. Maybe next time!
