Travel Tips for Mulhouse
Musée National de l'Automobile de Mulhouse
by globetrott
In 1976 the factories went bankrupt and all 2000 employees lost their jobs...
...BUT as soon as the dismissed employees have learned that there is such a giant collection of vintage-cars waiting inside some of the old production-halls, they occupied the museum for 2 years and Mr. Schlumpf could not open his museum.
Instead they put him to court, but he could escape to neutral Switzerland in the last moment... Today the whole collection is in posession of the " Association Proprietaire du Musée National de l'Automobile de Mulhouse "
...and is said to be the biggest collection of cars in the whole world / or at least the collection with the most precious cars in the world....
...and makes more money for the region of Alsace and Mulhouse that the old productions of worsted ever did...
Thanks a lot Mr.Schlumpf for this really great collection - who needs worsted anyway ??
Renault 4CV - 1956 - a car with a smile
by globetrott
This type of car has a special meaning to me, as THIS type of car was the very first car my father was able to buy, after he had made his job as a doctor with a motorbike only for several years.
And it was the first car I ever made a big tour with. From Austria to Hamburg in 1960 maybe, in the backrow of this car togeather with 3 of my brothers, partly on the autobahn / highway, partly on side-streets.

And the technical side of such a small car :
4 cylindres and 748ccm
21HP and a top-speed of 100km/h
Don't you see also a nice smile on the "face" of this car ???

Monet-Goyon Torpedo MV - 1925
by globetrott
There was a time, when this kind of boattail was quite common for cars.
I don't know a good reason for that, as aerodynamics are much more important in the front of the car, maybe it was just the idea to have an elegant design.
This one was the very first car of the company that had just built motorcycles before.
Maybe that is the reason, why this car had a kick-starter only - quite unusual for a car in 1925.

Bugatti 55 Roadstar - 1935
by globetrott
What an elegant sportscar !
On the big photo in the back : Jean Bugatti - the son of Ettore Bugatti - a well known driver in car-races and a brilliant engeneer and stylist.
He died young, when testing one of his cars : he had an accident, when he tried to avoid a collition with a biker.
The death of Jean Bugatti somehow was the beginning of the end of the success and production of the Bugatti-cars.

Bugatti 43 Torpedo Grand Sport of 1929
by globetrott
This type of car was a very good success for Bugatti, although it was quite unconfortable and also quite expensive.
This car was styled a bit in the way of american cars of that time.
The car that is shown here, once belonged to King Leopold of Belgium.
