Wineyards surroundings - Alrededores
When you are aproaching Riquewirh the landscape is composed increasingly of wineyards. These are very nice because they are in the mountains and, at least for me, are very large compared with the small strains that exist in Spain.
Cuando vas acercándote a Riquewirh el paisaje tiene cada vez más viñedos. Estos son muy bonitos porque están en la montaña y, al menos para mí, son muy grandes en comparación con las pequeñas cepas que hay en España.
Walking Around Riquewihr
"Our Last Stop in Alsace"
After spending the night in Kaysersberg near Colmar, we decided to first walk around the old town of Riquewihr before heading back toward Paris through southern Champagne. This is another compact wine town with many old dwellings and an old castle. We did not go into the castle or the Communication Museum next door.
A fairytale town with gorgeus wines of Alsace
"Un pueblo de cuento con excelentes vinos"
We visited the small town of Riquewihr, driving from Strasbourg, for a wine tasting. It was a real surprise, because the whole city seems taken from a story based on the Middle Ages, with its wooden structure houses, the bright colors, the streets paved ... It's worth absolutly a visit.
The successors of Clovis had the habit of distributing their land to his most influyent Knights. In this case, this piece of land is left to a gentleman called "Richo" and the land was "Richovilla", which with the passage of time it became Riquewihr. The municipality remains in the hands of the Dukes of Wurtemberg until 1793. The shield of this family is represented by three deer horns, which are very present in town, and in the shield of the city. The star comes from the coat of Horbourg. The area belongs to France since 1796.

VISITING SINCE 1995...
The first time I was in Alsace in summer 1995 I just took a day-trip to this small idyllic village, the second time we decided to stay a few days here and now the third times in Jan. 2004 we even returned to that same hotel!
If you want some good tips on alsacian wines they will be gathered under "Shopping Tips" in all my Alsacian villages.
Hopefully after having tasted them at home - I will make some notes about them...soon to come as we already have opened a few of them.
"...The pearl of alsatian wineyards..."
"Medieval town, still these days..."
Riquewihr is a well preserved town in which layout and structure have not changed since the Middle Age.
The old houses built in the 16th and 17th century gives the visitors an image of hundred of years ago. Still every detail of that period is 'alive' : the courtyards, the galleries, the wells, the fountains...
The architecture of the Middle Age town can be seen because the people have not changed much to their houses. Wine making is their main objective in life and an growing industry is part of it...
The fortified city is only accessible through a few narrow entrances. This one is rather small, some are a little wider so also larger vehicles could enter the city...
The town is surrounded by wine yards.
Wine has played a very large part in the life and prosperity of this medieval town. Famous wine-growing families stayed in Riquewihr for generations...
