Hotel in Old Town Saverne

I have this crazy habit of choosing hotels that have the name of a family member. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Hotel Chez Jean was one of the really good ones. It is right in Old Town Saverne so you park your car and walk anyplace you want to go. The train station is a few blocks from the hotel so it also works for people on the train.

They speak French and German equally well and many of the staff spoke quite a bit of English. The staff is warm and friendly. We enjoyed them immensely.

There is a lift for those who need it. There is also a very nice restaurant. We ate there twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also had their Sunday morning breakfast buffet and it was spectacular. Madame Owner owns a fabulous pastry shop around the corner and she bakes for the Sunday buffet. It is definitely not for dieters!

Unique Quality: This is part of the Logis de France chain of small hotels. It is utterly French and charming. There are original watercolor paintings in halls and rooms. The restaurant is excellent and the staff friendly. The location can't be beat. We had a front room with a balcony overlooking the street with a lively sidewalk cafe below us.

A Marne-Rhine canal lock is two blocks away and it's fun to walk up and watch boats going through the canal lock while sipping a kir or coffee. We ate lunch by the canal one day and that was fun.

The hotel is a few blocks from the town chateau which is also a great place to visit.

Our favorite part of the hotel was the relaxing atmosphere. We were returning from a month in Bavaria and the Austrian Tirol and needed a few days to relax before we hopped our plane home from Paris. This was the perfect place to reintroduce ourselves to France. It would also be good if you were driving from Paris east to Germany . . . a good stopping place.
