Concentration Camp Natzweiler-Struthof
"17.7.1940"
On this day in July, prisoners from Schirmeck had to stard to build the Concentration Camp Natzweiler-Struthof. On May, 21th 1941 the Camp opened and the first prisoners moved in.
"7000 instead of 1500!"
The camp was built to hold 1500 prisoners. But the peak reached 7000 to 8000 prisoners!
The picture shows a model of the whole camp. Only the two buildings in the bottom and the two on top are still remaining.
All the other were burned down because of diseases.
"Crematorium"
This building is the sadest by far. Prisoners who entered this building were used for medical tests and got incinerate after this. How cruel were this guys?
"The Furnace"
This is were they incinerated the prisoners.
"Isolation"
If you had to move to this Jail, you could only pray to come out again alive.
Most of people got there, died after torture.
18 prisoners got squeezed into one cell. You had no possibility to sit or lie down. And this for a few days in a row!
And the hardest tretment were this very small cells, where you had to crouch.
"Gallows"
Some prisoners got haltered in front of all other prisoners, to discourage them of escaping or commotion.
"Common Grave"
Thousands of people got burried here. And a lot of them have never been identified.
"Very sad...."
Walking around in the camp brings you the pain and suffer of this sad part of the history a lot closer than just reading a history book.
