3 Day trip: 27th Dec to 30th Dec 2006

by Fionnan

Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année!

The girlfriend and I are going to Strasbourg on Wednesday for three days. I've read all of the other posts and learnt much. However, I still have three questions in particular:

1. Will many of the recommended places such as the museums and art galleries be open during these dates? If not, what could we see/visit instead?

2. Are 3 days too much to spend in Strasbourg? (We are going to Heidelberg on the 30th but if 2 days would be enough in Strasbourg at this time of year we could go a day earlier than planned and visit the surrounding region in Heidelberg)

3. Related to the first, what romantic things would you recommend we visit/see in Strasbourg during this time of year?

Merci d’avance.

Hi there, I think Strasbourg is a wonderful and romantic town, but I think two days just for the city would be enough. Most attractions are in the very centre, so you can do most things on foot. But the surrounding area, especially towards the south, is very beautiful, you could rent a car and drive towards Colmar and visit some of the wonderful wine villages of the Alsace (Riquewihr, St. Hippolyte, Turkheim etc.), the innumerable castles and drive on the Route des Cretes, have a meal at a ferme-auberge and so on, and so on.

I also know Heidelberg and the region very well. The surrounding area is not as spectacular as Alsace but there are also great historic towns which are worth a visit.

So a very difficult decision...

Do not know about opening hours of museums etc. I am too far away... (NZ)

Bonne année pour toi et ta petite amie... :-)

Travel Tips for Strasbourg

Petite France

by chancay

In the heart of the Petite France Quarter, the Covered-bridges with their three defensive towers offer the visitors a charming view on the river Ill and the Barrage Vauban.
On its top, from the Terrasse panoramique, you can see the Petite France Quarter with its old houses reflected in the still waters of the river Ill and in the background the Cathedrale.
The Barrage Vauban is a defensive dam built on the river Ill in the seventeeth century.

Il est interdit de scotcher!

by Nemorino

From this sign in the Palais des Fêtes I learned that there is a verb in French called scotcher, which means to fasten something with Scotch tape.

You're not allowed to paste, pin, nail, tack or tape anything to these walls, okay?

Petite France area

by Martin_S.

There is an area within Strausburg that is called "Petite France". Why is this so, I am not sure, it may stem from the fact that this piece of land changed hands between the French and Germans during many wars and disputes. Maybe, just maybe, while it was under German rule, some French decided to remind themselves of home!!

If you just take a train or a bus there you run the risk of missing the Alsatian countryside and the gorgeous Vosges mountains to the west. Take a car - the French highways are well-marked and maintained. In Strasbourg, of course, go on foot; or take a boat trip on the river.
