Yummy Food

by alexandraxsmithx

I was wondering if anyone went to strasbourg and if so what they had to eat. I would like to know what good food was present and how much it costs.

I want to suggest something totally different. Do not know if you like very rustic food but it is very typical for the region of Alsace. But we warned: Huge portions, very filling, not easy to digest, many calories.

It is best in the villages south of Strasbourg, and in the mountains (Vosges), but you also get it in the city.

One is Choucroute garnie. This is a pile of sauerkraut (cabbage), and on top of it you find sausages, cooked meat, and lard, and you eat it with potatoes.

Another typical meal is Baeckeoffa. This is a stew cooked for several hours in the oven. Meat, potatoes and carrots cooked in white wine of the region.

On the farms (fermes auberges) they serve a milker's meal. This consists of Roiggabraggeldi (not sure about the spelling...), this is roast potatoes with lard/bacon pieces, accompanied by a green salad. Baeckeoffa or Choucroute garnie as the second course, and if you are not lying on the seat to relax you can also take the dessert which is Siaskäs/Süßkäs (sweet cheese). This is something like quarg (cheese in the stage before it becomes cheese), with sugar, liquid cream and a schnapps on top. In total about 20 million calories.

Other typical desserts from Alsace are Kuglhupf (a kind of dry fluffy cake with a hole in the middle), and delicious apple tarts.

A lighter meal - a bit pizza-like - is Flammkueche, topped with onions, bacon and sour cream.

Bon appetit!

Another big heavy typical thing is jambonneau, a whole stewed pork hock, served on a heap of sauerkraut with boiled potatoes. It's quite good, but the portions are ridiculous. You get these sorts of things at any place called a brasserie, and they tend to be cheapish.

by Sjalen

Go for a walk around town. It is easily managed since the centre is on an island in the river Ill. This way you get a feeling for the wonderful mix of French and German everywhere. I love the feeling of Europe I get. The fact that the region has such a split history gives its people their very own identity and they seem to be able todeal with it, contrary to other 'split regions'.

Place de la République, Palais du Rhin, details

by JLBG

The Palace was rebuilt identical after the 1944 bombings. It is now called the Palais du Rhin (Rhine Palace) and hosts several city or offices belonging to the département du Bas-Rhin. The photos show various details of the sculptures of the building.

Irréductibles petits producteurs d'Alsace

by JLBG

Next to the Rue du Bain aux Plantes, place des Meuniers (Millers square) hosts a special marché de Noël, the "Irréductibles petits producteurs d'Alsace" (indomitable small producers of Alsace). They propose their own production, always natural, often organic : duck fat liver, smoked eel, whortleberries juice, honey, gingerbread, etc.

A course or two in cheese

by markyg about La Cloche a Fromage

I took the recommendation of another VT member and went to La Cloche a Fromage on the way back from Alsace to Frankfurt. It exceeded my expectations. The restaurant is relatively small, but you are able to sit with others. Reservations would be helpful. Dress was casual dressy(no jeans/t-shirts). We were the only non-French speaking people in the restaurant, but the waiters spoke good English and were friendly and helpful. We shared the general cheese plate, which had about 20 different cheeses for 24 Euro. Bread was free, but only interfered with the taste. They had 4 different types of cheese plates, depending on your taste/experience. The waiter described each one and even wrote down the ones we like so we could purchase them across the street, though the cheese shop is closed on Sundays. While this is a phenominal place to try and learn aboutFrench cheese, their other menu items seemed wonderful. Most people in the place were either eating various meat dishes or fondue. They had an extensive French wine list. The desserts were a bit expensive, but worth the money. Even the music was some nice jazz, a rarity in European restaurants.
