What's with the 29th of November?

by domineex

I'm planning a short trip for 2 days. I cannot find any accomodation available for Saturday 29th November. No problem with 28th or 30th, but only 29th. Is there any special event on this date in Strasbourg?

Texwork, an international textiles fair, is on that weekend and the Saturday night is the one most people have to stay if arriving Saturday morning and leaving Sunday evening.
Frédéric François is performing on 29/11/08 at Le Zénith (max capacity just under 10,000!).
Saturday 29 November is also the first day of the 2008 Christmas market although I wouldn't have thought that would be so popular.

Place de la République, Palais du Rhin

by JLBG

The Emperor's Palace was built between 1883 and 1888 by Hermann Eggert on the model of the Pitti Palace in Florence. It mixes the Florence Renaissance style with the Berlin monumental baroque style with some borrowing from the antiquity.

In the middle of the square (second photo), the Monument aux morts (War Memorial) of WWII, built in 1936 shows a mother with her two sons, one that died for France and the other that died for Germany.

For those that do not want a hot beverage, there are also sweets and candies. Here there was a booth where they made peanuts coated with melted brown sugar. You can see in the background the apparatus that turns on its axis to make them and the candies in the foreground.

In memory of an influent citizen : Place Gutenberg

by mariev

Johannes Gensfleisch, aka Gutenberg was born in Mayence (Germany) between 1394 and 1399 and came in Strasbourg around 1434.

It is here that he, in collaboration with the local goldsmith Andreas Dritzehn, did his firsts experiments with mobile characters printing : At this time, the existing technic was to engrave the complete page on a plate before printing, the new technique allowed to reuse the individual characters and thus to create a more economical solution to print books.

He went back to Mayence around 1448 where he got associated with Peter Schoeffer (who elaborated the precise kind of metal to use and perfected the way to create the characters) and Johannes Fust (the money lender)
Their fisrt production : the 42 lines Bible was printed between 1450 and 1456.

Gutenberg died in 1468 in Mayence. Despite being born and dead there, he is considered an honorary citizen in Strasbourg, beside the statue standing on a place named after him, one of the biggest high school in town perpetuates his name.

It is impossible to properly estimate Gutenberg influence in our world, but "enormous" seems correct.
The weblink below refers to a project he would certainly have suported : the Project Gutenberg aims to offer free electronic books (eBooks or etexts) on the Internet. The collection of more than 15.000 eBooks was produced by hundreds of volunteers. Most of the Project Gutenberg eBooks are older literary works that are in the public domain.
