Avoid the African men selling knock-off bags. Oh, wait, that is a TOURIST TRAP type piece of advice. Sorry!!! But perhaps more importantly, you oughta eat Quiche! - Ah, maybe that should go under the RESTAURANT type of advice. Ah, heck. What do you do in Strasbourg? See the big aass church, and duck back into Germany where food, wine and accomodations are cheap! Walking across the small river that separates the new town from the old town, there were a few policemen on a boat and one lone scubadiver searching for 'SOMETHING' in the water. Pretty ominous, as many passing by pedistrians watched the search. We decided to walk on before he FOUND something!
Place De La Republique
by bugulma
It is cornered by five official majestic buildings caracteristic of the architecture under the reign of the Prussian emperors after 1870. In the center, a monument stands to honor the dead, erected in 1936 by the sculptor Drivier. It represents a mother with her two sons, one dead for France, the other for Germany, a dramatic situation experienced by the Alsatians during both two world wars.

INTERESTED IN LOCAL NEWS ? If you don't read french but you can read german, you have to know that the local newspaper LES DERNIERES NOUVELLES D'ALSACE' is printed in both languages.
The red edition

in german. It is so because a lot of old people learnt only german at school between 1871 and 1918 (As Alsace was a german province) & during the 'occupation' in WW II.
VERSION FRANCAISE
Si vous ne lisez pas le français mais l'allemand, vous pouvez vous procurer la version des DERNIERES NOUVELLES D'ALSACE en la langue de Goethe (la bleue).

Place Marche Gayot.
A lovely square, totally enclosed by cafes and bars and frequented by students and those in the know. Totally ignored by the guide books we read, we mistook this place for the Place St. Etienne for a short while. It's quite quiet and relaxed during the day, more lively and hectic by night.
Excellent Carpaccio
by aqazi about Bistro de la Gare
We came here with friends from Mullhouse in Germany. They said that this place served the best carpaccio in town and I think they were right. Strabourg is a culnary delight and you probably won't be too disspointed whereever you go. This place is popular so you'd do well to book a table in advance.
They serve lots of other things but I wanted to try the salmon carpaccio and it was lovely. I tased Nancy's beef carpacio which was OK but it felt kind of wierd eating raw meat. Of course pairing your meal with some Alsacian wine is a must. Luckily our host was a wine merchant so we were in good company.
