Visiting Bergerac /Bordeaux
by Jivegirl
My husband myself an 3 year old son are flying to Bordeaux in september (cheap flights oh yes).
Not sure whether to stay in Bordeaux or Bergerac and travel around.. Would Bordeaux be too big and busy for a small boy ? Or are we best getting a hotel with swimming pool (hoping for good September weather!) in Bergerac and visit Perigieux ,Sarlat and Bordeaux for the day etc.Is ther enough to see in Bergerac for a week.
We are into sightseeing and relaxing at quiet cafes etc with a good meal and a drink ...our son has known the word "pub" and Daddys "juice" from an early age!.
We usually rely on public transport but gather it is not so easy to get around in this area so we may splash out on car hire.
Also had thought any hotels in Bordeaux would be of the ibis kind cheap and cheerfull but have heard the area around the station(where they seem to be is far out from the centere and dodgy.
Bergerac hotels with swimming pools seem to be near Bergerac station but hopefully has none of the dodgyness of the Bordeaux station area.
Are there any good local food festivals etc on in September..
Any advice anyone can give Id be grateful our son is into boats trains swings and carousels

Maybe the easiest to do is hire a 'gite' this is a small apartment usually attached to a house or in a seperate building not too far from the house. It is something between a B&B and renting a house. prices in that area should be between 250 and 400 euro per week depending on where you'll find yourself. Renting a car is a very good option since there is a lot to see in that area. Apart from Bergerac and Perigieux (where i haven't been to yet) there are castles, loads of abbeys and even caves around for people to explore. Bordeaux might be nice for a day but maybe for a 3 year old a bit too much. In the area are also several activity areas with swimming pools or small lakes and such. Weather should be good though i have heard it isn't as good this year as normal for that region. But still very good swimming weather as far as i have heard.

My wife and I visited Bergerac in July. We stayed at the Europ Hotel. A comfortable hotel with a pool on the outskirts of the town, near to the old town and the station. A trip to Bordaux by train is very convenient.
We hired a car for a few days from Ucar near the station. Roads are very good, little traffic. You don't need acar in Bergerac it is easy to walk around. A taxi from the airport will be less than 10 euros.
Did we enjoy it, yes, we are going back in October.
Hope you enjoy it as much was we did.

Bergerac ~ Architecture
by Canadienne
Many of the streets that run through the vieille ville are lined with stone and half-timbered houses ~ said to originally be labourers' cottages. The weather was perfect for just meandering through the mazes of lanes, admiring the architecture and private gardens.
