I've done a bit of travelling in that area.
There aren't any direct buses. so the train is your only option unless you hire a car.
Most of the train journeys involve a change of train in Bayonne and the connections are sometimes not all that wonderful even though the two are only ten minutes apart. And there are gaps of around 4 hours between trains.

Hope that helps.
Martin,
Did you end up taking the trains? I'm traveling to Biarritz from Madrid and back again through San Sebastian in August.
How were the trains between France and spain?
Many thanks.

Biarritz is a great refreshing place to visit. It is on the south east coast of France, below mountains, and is a deep golden sanded, fresh Atlantic winded, great waves, great to dip into, (keep well inside your depth if you ain't a strong swimmer), great surf, and lotsa surfers, sun, sun and more sun, miles of beach, great fun, lotsa people sunbathing, yet lots of tiny little quiet coves. A walk on the beach is a must, and visit Biarritz itself also of course. Watch out though - prices can be expensive (in 1999) for beer and food, unsure of what else may be...It's well worth the visit - go there if you feel like blowing away some cobwebs and are looking for some golden rays :)
