housing and places to see

by kkitayama

Any advice on points of interest or places to visit in the Bordeaux area. I have several weeks and it would be during the summer.
Thanks

With that much time, you should be able to see quite a lot. Some of the wine towns like St. Emilion are fun, and don't miss the beautiful towns of the Dordogne and Lot valleys... Rocamadur, Sarlat, Cahors etc. The best cave is near Cahors... Peche Merle.

I think the beaches of Arcachon is worth visiting place as well. And I agree it is very interesting to visit wine cities around Bordeaux. Cognac town is not far from Bordeaux too. Have a nice time in summer (I'm very jealous you'll be there :-))), one of my favorite places in Europe) :-)

You could stay at a chateau! We stayed at Chateau de Roques which is in Puisseguin near Bordeaux. It's a small chateau in a vineyard and they do have wine tasting. They also have a lovely restaurant and a resident kitty. There is a games room upstairs and you can take lovely long walks in the area. Their webi site is http://www.chateau-de-roques.com/renseignementa.htm and they can also be accessed via the Logis de France. For a chateau it is quite reasonable in cost (or we wouldn't have stayed there).

I put a Tip on my VT Travel Page and here is a link for that http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/7ba16/178f4/3/

You will have to click on Overview to get the photo or type Puisseguin into the VT Search Window above.

Above suggestions are excellent. We particularly enjoyed St. Emilion but the entire area is wonderful.

When people answer you here, click on their names. That takes you to their Home Page and then you can click on their Travel Pages and see the photos and Tips they have written about the area. Also be sure to type Bordeaux into the VT Search Window because there are many excellent suggestions here on the web site.

It's a lovely place to spend a few weeks so I hope you have a good time.

Chateau de Roques

by ASASG

Hi, We have made reservations for dinner and a room at the Chateau de Roques in Saint Emilion for a night in mid-May: I actually don't recall how I found it! But then I came across your note and I'm wondering if you can expand a little on your experiences in the region. We will only be there for a single day (en route between Saumur in the Loire and San Sebastian in Spain). If you can recall an especially enjoyable wine tour == etc. And of course any tips about the experience at Chateau de Roques as well!

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Great viewpoint

by Mique

If you are by car this might be something for you. When we headed back to the car we walked alongside the Garonne river. But unfortunately there was no place where we good get a good view of the pont de Pierre. We had already given up and were heading home when we chose the wrong bridge to cross. We did cross over the pont de pierre itself instead of the pont st. jean. When you've crossed the bridge, go right and go immediately right again. There is a small parking space there where you can take excellent pictures

CASTLENAUD

by zuriga

Castlenaud Castle is an impressive ruin with a lovely view of the valleys below. It's an example of a medieval fortress and many weapons are still on display. There are some audio-visual demonstrations and a museum which shows just how warfare was conducted using artillery towers and early cannons.

Cathedrale St-Andre

by Sambawalk

After the Revolution, during which the instrument was destroyed in 1629, was installed in the Primatiale Saint-André, in 1804, the organ of La Micot Réole.
But ten years later, to the weakness of the instrument, we exchanged the interior with that of the organ of the Abbey Church Sainte-Croix de Bordeaux, built in 1748 by Dom Bedos de Celles. Even before the disappointing result, it was enlarged in 1875 by an organ builder George Wenner Bordeaux who gave a grand narrative expressive, while its transmissions of notes, they were electrified in 1954 by Joseph Beuchet organ. Dismantled in 1973 to reconstruct the Holy Cross Church Organ Dom Bedos, this composite organ was replaced in the same-buffet, returned to his disposal before 1875 - by a neo-classical instrument developed by the factor Georges Danion organ comprising 76 games spread over 4 real manual keyboards of 61 notes and a pedal 32 notes.

Cathedral Saint Andre

by Mique

This is THE landmark in Bordeaux i would say. Together with the tower that stands next to it. Like most cathedrals i like the outside more then the inside. But that's a very personal thing

From the original building dating back to 1096 there is only a small part of the outer walls reserved. I was already wondering since one of the sides of the cathedral doesn't completely seem to fitt with the rest. During the 14th till the 16th century the cathedral underwent some major changes. It took most of the 19th century to make all the necessary restaurations to the building
