Help needed with planning for Bordeaux region trip!!

by BooFit

I will be travelling to the Bordeaux region and spending approximately 6 nights there. I am planning for a group of 4 adults and hope someone out there can help me with suggestions of places to go to, to eat at, etc. We are interested in good local food (foie gras, duck, oysters and mussels - we'll ignore our doctor's advice re high cholesterol) and wine (naturally!!), some easy hiking and walks (duration of about 1-4 hours) with nice scenery. We will rent a car so we will be able to venture outside Bordeaux. We speak fluent English but un petit peu French. (I am now learning from a Teach Yourself French book during my free time - which is not much as I have a busy job). Apart from things to do and places to see, I need to also plan for hotel accommodation. We plan on spending around 150- 170 Euro for one room per night. Someone told me not to stay in Bordeaux hotels but go to Perigold and other areas. I would be most thankful if someone could give me some advice on this as well!! Merci Beaucoup!!

I'll recommend the place we stayed near Bordeaux. It was utterly charming and they have a very good restaurant on site. It's a chateau but not Versailles. It's small (for a chateau), plain and on top of a hill with gorgeous views of the Bordeaux wine region.

As you can see, they are quite reasonable and it is a good location for visiting Bordeaux, St. Emilion and the Bordeaux wine region. There is a winery on site with degustation available. With a larger group you might want to arrange the degustation beforehand when you book.

The people who work there speak English and are very friendly. They also have an adorable yellow kitty who greets you and bids you farewell.

Thanks for the accommodation suggestion! Will certainly check it out. It is 8:30am where I am now (I live in Asia), so could not post a response earlier! I am 11 hours ahead of the east coast of North America, 7 hours (or so) ahead of France. Hope I will get some more suggestions as to things to do and places to visit....

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Esplande des Quinconces

by KiNyA

The most prominent feature of Esplande des Quinconces, a large square, is the fountain-monument to the Girondins, a group of moderate, bourgeois National Assembly deputies during the French Revolution, 22 of whom were excuted in 1793 for alleged counter-Revolutionary activities. The entire 50-metre-high ensemble, completed in 1902, was dismantled in 1943 by the Germans so the statues could be melted down for their 52 tonnes of bronze.

Tour Pey-Berland

by Gypsystravels

The Tour Pey- Berland is St Andre's Cathedral's bell tower and a fine example of the "Flamboyant Gothic" style with a 19th century staute of Notre Dame-d'Aquitaine.

The tower holds the clocks that goes with St Andre's cathedral and was build in 1440.
I was amazed to see that along with St Michel's Basilica, St Andre's Cathedral also has a seperate tower. Not sure what the reason behind this is.

Go Inside of Basilica St.-Michel

by hquittner

The interior of the church discloses a tall and broad-arched nave in two levels. with a tall arcade and large upper windows.. The windows in the choir were destroyed in WWII and delightful new ones were created by Max Ingrand. The pretty pulpit of the 18C shows St.-Michel killing the dragon on its top. (The church is poorly illuminated and our photos are poor).

Bordeaux - City of World Importance!

by aaaarrgh

Less than a week before I visited Bordeaux, it was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Not at all surprising really, its classical cream-coloured stone buildings go on forever. And Bordeaux acts as the deputy capital city of France whenever there is a sniff of trouble in Paris.

It was also part of England until 1453, though it is now firmly French in every sense, particularly because the local area produces vast amounts of good wine!

My stay was a great experience, the Bordelaise were very welcoming and friendly. If it wasn't for Bordeaux's imperialist, anti-revolutionary, conservative political history it would be my new favorite French city ;o)
