Drive from Nantes to Bordeaux to Biarritz

by katinhk

Hello,

My boyfriend and I are planning a holiday in France this spring, and we were thinking perhaps to rent a car in Nantes, and take the scenic route down the coast to Biarritz (via La Rochelle and Bordeaux), where a friend lives.

We would be most grateful to anyone who could give us advice on:
a)how long each leg of the journey (Nantes-La Rochelle, La Rochelle-Bordeaux, Bordeaux-Biarritz) might take, given that we probably won't use the autoroute
(would lunch in La Rochelle, dinner in Bordeaux be feasible for the first day, for example?);
and
b)whether mid-March is a good time to be doing this trip?

Thanks
Katrina

Thanks Ranger49 and pedmar, you've both been really kind and helpful. Not having ever driven on the continent for any great distance in the past, your information about the websites was particularly useful. We're actually going to be a bit pressed for time so will try to do the trip in two full days, but hopefully this won't be the last time, and we will be keeping an eye out for attractive places we might want to visit on a slower trip in the future. I will certainly look into the towns and villages you mention.

Thanks again,
Katrina

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Bordeaux - the wine city

by MEdelmann

Bordeaux has been the centre of wine production and wine research in France and the world for a long time.

Although Bordeaux wines have got a lot of competition they are still very popular and asked. There is held a big wine trade fair each two years, the "Vinexpo". Wine producers and traders from all over the world come there and exchange information, taste wines and much more. And there are also hold seminars about wine.

'Square Vinet' Green Wall

by aaaarrgh

Bordeaux has a very unusual and delightful hidden corner - square Vinet - which has a planted 'green wall' around its border. Unusual plants grow out of small pockets in the walls, creating a long vertical garden. The walls were designed by botanist Patrick Blanc. There is seating and a small childrens playground in the square.

I read a brief mention of this unique green space andd fortunately it was not too difficult to find, at the junction of rue Vinet and rue du Cancera, in the Saint Pierre district.

Open 7am to 8pm but the wall is always visible through the railings

Le Palais Rohan

by black_mimi99

Le Palais Rohan has served as Hotel de Ville or city hall since the 1800s, although it was originally constructed as the home of an archbishop. This attraction is likely one reason Bordeaux has been compared to Versailles. Don’t miss the stunning trompe l’oeil décor in the dining room.

Fontaine des Girondins

by black_mimi99

At the foot of the Monument to the Girondins are two beautiful fountains. In this photo you can see one of them. The other one is on the other side. Next to this column there are a couple of statues that honor two of the greatest names of Bordeaux. One is dedicated to the philosopher and former Mayor of Bordeaux Michel de Montaigne. The other one is dedicated to Charles Louis de Montesquieu, one of the architects of the "century of the lights". He was not only an intellectual, but also a winegrower.

Nodre DAME Church

by lorgnierl

The facade of this 18th century baroque style church is richly ornamented and grandly proportioned.a 17th century cloister next to the church houses an art gallery. On the other side, the passage Saregt, a 19th century shopping arcade, lead to the cours de l intendance and its luxury shops
