Alternatives to driving

by Athenefishb

Bonjour! I'm going to visit Bordeaux next week for 3 days. Is it possible to explore the area without driving my own car? I'm planing to spend a day in St. Emilion. Is there train service to St. Emilion from Bordeaux? In St. Emilion, can I travel around on foot? Or better off join some guided tour?

Merci!!

I can only answer part of this since we always have a car. In St. Emilion you can easily walk all over town on foot. I can't think of a better way to see everything. It's not a large town and is absolutely beautiful. It is very touristy, but we are tourists and enjoy that sort of thing.

Since it is a major tourist attraction, you should be able to find transportation easily. Ask at the Bordeaux Tourist Bureau. I'm sure they can find a bus or a tour for you to take. They are very helpful.

Have a great trip. 8^)

Seems to be no direct service from Bordeaux to St Emilion by bus, you'll have to take a train to Libourne and then bus 318 to St Emilion.
As far as I can remember there is a train station close to St Emilion, but *not* at a walking distance...

It honestly might be easier to take a bus tour from Bordeaux to St. Emilion. There are usually lots of tour buses there so I know there are tours. That way you wouldn't have to worry about trains and buses and how to get into town.

Just a thought. 8^)

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Grand Theatre Area

by KiNyA

Bordeaux's neoclassical Grand Theatre is on the Place de la Comedie. It is surrounded by a Corinthian colonnade decorated with 12 figures of the Muses and Graces, was buils in the 1770s.
A bit to the east along the river, Place de la Bourse, built between 1731 and 1755, is flanked by the old Hotel de la Douane and the Bourse du Commerce.

Tramway

La communauté d'agglomérations de Bordeaux s'est doté d'un nouveau tramway en site propre. Ce nouveau moyen de transports en communs est très moderne, fonctionnel et confortable.

The community of agglomerations of Bordeaux endowed itself with a new tram in clean site. This new means of transportation in outbuildingses is very modern, functional and comfortable.

You should definitively go to...

by nicolaspelon

You should definitively go to Saint Emilion, Arcachon, La Dune du Pyla to find exciting ballads outside Bordeaux

Downtown, I recommand the place of the victory, St Catherine Street, 'Le grand Theatre' (The Big Theatre), the Tourny Alleys, The Quinquonces place, the Colbert (a former battleship now it's a museum), the Aquitaine Museum, The Museum of Moderm Arts

Place de la Bourse and the 'Miroir des Quais'

by black_mimi99

Also known as Place Royale, this is a perfect example of Bordeaux architecture at the end of the 18th century. This is a beautiful line of archways and slate roofs, with an impressive fountain in the centre - a setting made even more magnificent when it is lit up at night. There is a superb view of the Garonne river's right bank from this square.

Across the road of Place de la Bourse there is 'Miroir des Quais' With a surface of 3450 m2, Bordeaux is equipped with the largest water mirror of the world.
Designed by Jean-Max Llorca in 2005, the system makes it possible to reveal one after the other a mirror effect (with 2 centimetres of water stagnating on a granite flagstone) and a fog effect which can reach up to 2 meters height.

I love when it start nite..... If u are here, better come @ nite, so u will get a spectacular picture of this Place de la Bourse and the 'Miroir des Quais'.

Promenade in Bordeaux

by Kate-Me

We only spent 2 days in the Bordeaux area, and only really a couple of hours in the centre, so my photo collection isn't very detailed.

We did however have a great guide to show us around, my friend Theo.
:-)

Here is one of the many nice sights we saw, the fountain in the Place des Quinconces
