I am travelling from London to Bordeaux in August by train. As I have 3 children in my party, should I change at Lille or Paris ? Lille seems to easiest way as I would only have to change platforms for the TGV. However, it seems that if I change in Paris, the overall train journey is a lot quicker. Has anyone
I have taken the train from Paris to Bordeaux. I believe it is a high speed train. I don't know if you have to travel the same way roundtrip, but every train I have ever taken into Paris has been crowded. Two out of the three times I have traveled into Paris the train I wanted to buy tickets for was sold out. If you have children with you, I would imagine that it would be easier to change change in a less crowded train station. And in Paris it is chaos at every train station.

There are several old gates to the city that were kept. Some hundreds ago they were entrance to the city. They were built in XIV-XV centuries. The most impressive one is Grosse Cloche, Big Clock Tower. It is situated on the crossing Cours Victor Hugo and Rue St. James. There is a fantastic view in night.
The railway arrived from Paris in 1852. Today you can get from Bordeaux to Paris Montparnasse in 3 and half hours. In the other direction, you could get to the Spanish border in about 2 and half hours.
Gare St Jean is one of those delightful French railway stations that still uses the mechanical train departures display. Dozens of people stand watching (and listening to) the clac-clac-clac as the timetable updates itself above the ticket hall.
Directly outside is a tram stop with trams leaving every few minutes towards the city centre.
Another wonderful place to have a rest is Place Gambetta. There is a little pond in the center and trees around. I think it's in 5 minutes by feet from Cathedral or City Hall to the North of the city.
Walking along the 'Quartier Saint Pierre', you get to the 'Place du Palais' and the 'Porte Cailhau'. This gate was built in 1494 and used to be one of the main entries to the city. It was the gate great personalities used to enter the city.
Not a bad city for taking photos and looking at buildings, there were some really good shops, not something if you are a budget traveller but love shopping! I'm lucky i dont like shopping so I enjoyed the eating part! :p
It was football season, we watched some football in some bars, drank lots of beer, and were given some glasses, tshirt and glow thingies by the bar owner. Quite nice adn very french.
