Accommodation for Rugby World Cup

by Omstidom

Not sure if anyone can help out there but finding any kind of accommodation for the nights Ireland are playing in Bordeaux (September 9th and September 15th) in the RWC is near on impossible. Have tried all the usual places from hostel to 5 star to no avail (wanting to be somewhere even close ish to town). If any locals or anyone else can offer any advice (or me a bed for a couple of nights ;-) ) please let me know!

I'm headin there too for the Namibia game, hotels.com still seems to have lots of availability. Hope it helps.

I left it a bit late too but found this place only last week:
http://www.hotel-le-continental.com
Pretty close to town and seems to have good reviews on the web.

There are a few places left. Loads listed on the Tourism Bordeaux website.

Best of luck!!! :-)

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Hit the Streets

by black_mimi99

This Narrow street just beside the La Grosse Cloche \ the big Clock.

Streets are narrow and houses tall, so no much sun gets here. If you have a car you better leave it at your hotel, because finding a place to park here is almost impossible.

La Cabane D'Edouard

by JulesH

The town of Arcachon, le Dune de Pilar, Lege Cap Ferret, Truc Vert and Pointe Cap Ferret are all places to visit around the Bassin D'Arcachon, a large round inlet of water fed by Atlantic tides. Arcachon itself is a fairly busy and touristic town, but the opposite side of the Bassin is a different kettle of fish. Not really a complete journey you can comfortably do in a day, even by car, you are recommended to choose either Arcachon and the Dune de Pilar on one side of the Bassin, or Lege Cap Ferret, Truc Vert and the Pointe on the other. On this trip, we chose to visit the quieter side and visited a popular but hidden treasure of a seafood restaurant in the tiny port village of Claouey called La Cabane d'Edouarde. The shellfish here could not be more freshly caught (oysters are a speciality in season) and the lobster we shared as part of the seafood platter was the most delicious we'd ever tasted. The seafood platter costs €45 for two people. The name of the restaurant however sums up it's simplicity...it is no more than a shack with tables nestling among bamboo plants and facing out across the Bassin. Before the tables are laid and the candles are lit you could be forgiven for thinking that this isn't even a place to eat, but the food more than makes up for the lack of sumptuous surroundings. The telling story is the constant stream of locals who choose to travel by car to pick up a platter of oysters on ice to take home with them throughout the evening. To get there you need to take the last turning on the left before the Bassin and drive right to the end. You'll find it on the left past the furtherst car park. The address is Port de Claouey, Cabanes 1 & 3, 33950 Lege Cap Ferret.

Sand and more Sand

by kop-queen

Travel a few miles North from Biscarosse up the coast to Archachon - it boasts the biggest sand dune in Europe. If you look to one side there are a set of steps - don't do what we did and attempt to walk up the dune (1 step forward, 2 steps back springs to mind) unless you are feeling very fit.

The town of Archachon was far more touristy but worth a visit.

Esplanade des Quinconces

The 'Esplanade des Quinconces' is a huge promenade that takes up more than 12 hectares in the heart of Bordeaux by the river 'la Garonne'. While I was in Bordeaux a famous circus was visiting the city.

Bordeaux , la ville beige

by violette_ca

I loved visited this city. I arrived too late for the grape harvests, zut!! It was a very rainy period and the grape harvest was made the weekend before that I arrive. But that smelt so good in wine storehouses. The smell of the grape pressing hummmm!! It is like you smell a cork of a bottle of wine.
What struck me in the old part of Bordeaux, it is that almost all the buildings are "beige" color.

Here we see the Big Bell, a momument of the Middle Ages (15th century).
It is the symbol of the city that appears on his armoirie.

"Place Quiconce"

Merci Giloux

Very beautiful monument with a beautiful story. Quite at the top, the Genius of the Freedom. This momument was kidnapped during the last war to get back the metal. We found it with all these elements and to return to his initial place in 1983.

When I was there, the Place(Square) Quinconce was invades by roundabout, games and a lot of people. It was the autumn fair.
Place(Square) Quinconce was also my point of reference in the city.

Here a part of the monument and the pond.
