Chateau in September

by marybutton

Hello: I am planning on running the MEDOC Marathon in September. There are going to be 8 people in our party. We would really love to stay in a chateau for the 6 days we are there. Any suggestions?

Hi. We stayed at the Chateau de Rocques near Puisseguin in the Bordeaux area. It was very nice and has a good restaurant. It's in a vineyard and they do have tastings. It is definitely out in the country but driving distances are not bad in that area.

Here's a link to my Puisseguin Travel Page.

Check the Hotels and Accomodations Tip at the bottom of the page for chateau information.

Travel Tips for Bordeaux

Esplanade des Quinconces

by Lilasel

North of the centre is the vast open square of the esplanade des Quinconces. One of the tallest monuments in Bordeaux, the Monument to the Girondins and the Republic, dominates the east side of this wide promenade. This monument was erected at the end of 19th century to honour the deputies of the revolution.
The Esplanade des Quinconces takes up more than 12 hectares.

The trompe-d'oeils of St-Bruno's

by Mique

St-Bruno's is quite a different kind of church. It has a great vaulted ceiling wich is truly impressive but i liked the fresco's the most. In many places there is a really good trompe d'oeil (3d-effect). Most notably on the roof where it looks like there is a small turret with glass windows.

Cathedral St.-Andre: The Royal Portal

by hquittner

The Royal Portal gives access to the nave (now closed) and is to the right (west ) of the transept portal. It is late 13C sculpture at its best and has been lovingly restored by Viollet-le-Duc. A row of 8 statues in arcades is above displaying 6 bishops, a king and a queen. The tympanum is a Last Judgment with a Resurrection on the lintel and the ensuing action above that (Hell is no longer depicted by le- Duc. Did he delete it?). Each jamb contains 5 grand statues of the Apostles. The grime is accumulation of the last century only, although cleaning haltingly proceeds.

Grand Theatre

by Gypsystravels

Located here in the Place de Comedie is the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux. It really is a beautiful site to see. The structure was designed by Victor Louis. The theatre has a neo-classical facade with the portico decorated with 12 Corinthian style columns and on top of the facade are 12 statues, 9 of which represent the art muses and three goddesses (Juno, Venus, and Minerva).

The interior of the building is quite impressive as well with its double staircase leading to the theatre.

Drop in for a Drop

by Orchid

Arrived here from La Rochelle, with a desire to visit the nearly wine regions. We'd all heard of Bordeaux.

I recall the Youth hostel as being pretty dire, they made white tea by adding a tea bag to warmed milk. True!

We did not waste long checking out the city - I'm sure there is much to see, but our hearts were set on the surrounding wine villages.
